PERSONALLY I wouldn't have gone for fibre.

I'd have said EVERYONE gets free 20mb broadband, delivered by the state, BUT that fibre is the private upsell bit.

But then the fibre promise has also made Boris stop spouting shite about 'gigabit broadband' so that's nice.
Mostly because free broadband IS achievable, and provides a genuine base-level requirement for the 'internet as a human right' argument that IMHO is now correct.
You'd sort of also be doing the equivalent of what Bevan did with doctors: let them still do the pricey upsell private shit, but insist on NHS as well.

It currently costs roughly £20m a mile to build a railway.

At that rate, it would cost 100 BILLION POUNDS to 'undo' the Beeching cuts.

So this is a commitment to 0.5% of that total.

Remember: Just because a number sounds impressive, doesn't mean that it is.
Back in 2013, on the 50th anniversary of its publishing, we explored the myth and reality of the Beeching Report (and its REAL impact) on @lonrec

As you might suspect, it is more complex than people like to paint it. And in many cases the cuts it proposed made sense.
Indeed part of Shapps' tweet gives the game away on the fact that the Beeching cuts weren't universally bad.

Beeching was commissioned by the CONSERVATIVE, and infamously corrupt, Transport Secretary Ernest Marples.

Privatisation has been central to the neoliberal project for decades. The 'market' goes deep into spheres of society previously insulated from business: private firms, their owners & senior managers profit from services that should be provided publicly, on the basis of need.
The objective of Thatcher's privatization was to turn British people into a nation of shareholders. It failed. Before Thatche, almost 40% of the shares in British companies were held by individuals. By 1981, it was less than 30%. When she died in 2013, it was under 12%.

During the Chandrababu Govt, Amravati received political as well as financial patronage. Now, with Jagan Reddy being incharge of the state, the project is in shambles. World Bank & ADB pulled out of the project and the Government is looking for reasons to scrap it. 2/n
The bonds issued to support the financing needs of the project were subscribed by Franklin MF and Birla MF. The bonds are guaranteed by the AP Govt but it's not sure if the Govt would keep servicing the bonds. The risk of lending to a state govt has again come to the fore. 3/11

Pretty impressive.
One of the hallmarks of disinformation is to quickly flood numerous competing conspiracies into the media so that the public gets confused but believes the "official" narrative as most likely. Without other theories the government version does not hold up under singular scrutiny.

Let's suppose we ask two qns

1. Would you like the State to be "secular"?
2. Would you like the State to safeguard "religious liberty" of every citizen?

Most liberals (& even many conservatives) would answer a resounding "Yes" to both

But these are 2 very different questions!
How do we understand the difference? Does the difference (even if a semantic one exists) really matter?

Are there instances where you need to cease being "secular" as a State to preserve religious liberty?
OR
You need to violate religious liberties to safeguard "secularism"?
The United States is an example of a country that swears to preserve "religious liberties". It is safeguarded for every citizen by way of the "First Amendment"- which is the 1st of the 10 Bill of Rights introduced in 1791

But US is not quite a secular state. Atleast not formally
