Corbyn-Kosovo Pt II

'We could not let fascism be reborn, says Cook'

Some MPs could, Tam Dalyell forced a technical motion, for those who opposed NATO intervention.

Only 11 MPs did, including Jeremy Corbyn.

Clare Short called them a 'disgrace'. 1/14
The Hard-Left was split over what to do over Kosovo, but even in the dissenters they were driven by different motivations.

With Corbyn and Galloway being by an 'anti-American streak', with most others being driven by objections to military action. 2/11
Others on the hard-Left actually supported the NATO intervention (to a degree).

Livingstone & Paul Flynn signed EDM 559 which justified the NATO intervention.

While Diane Abbott and Provisional John McDonnell signed EDM 571 to prosecute Kosovo war criminals. 3/11
'Massacre in a Spring Meadow'

While Corbyn and a tiny number of Labour MPs continued to oppose NATO's humanitarian intervention, the Serbs continued the killing and ethnic cleansing. 4/11
PM Tony Blair: 'We cannot allow a policy of ethnic cleansing to be carried out in this part of the the world... This is not a battle for NATO, this is not a battle for territory, this is a battle for humanity. This is a just cause, it is a rightful cause.' 5/11
Blair called it a 'battle for humanity', Corbyn called it 'Brutalising the Balkans'.

Here the Morning Star reprinted large sections of Corbyn's Common's speech in opposing the intervention, it's mostly anti NATO rhetoric mixed with pseudo-history. 6/11
Corbyn's principle comments on Kosovo were that the NATO bombing made thing worse and it was NATO (and not the Serbs) were responsible for the refugees!

Rachel Squires (Lab) put Corbyn straight on a number of issues in her speech. [both HC Deb 18 May 1999 v331 cc892-970] 7/11
By the end of May only Corbyn and comrade Simpson were left trying to stop the NATO bombing of the Serbs, despite the clear evidence of genocide and ethnic cleansing being perpetrated by them. 8/11
Corbyn's callous lack of compassion, empathy and sympathy was being pointed out to him in the Commons.

First by the Prime Minister: 'I hoped he would mention also the thousands who have been butchered in Kosovo.' 9/11
And then again by the Defence Sec:
'It will be nice - and, gosh, will I welcome it! - when my hon. Friend comes to the Chamber and denounces the violence perpetrated against women and children inside Kosovo.'
[HC Deb 26 May 1999 vol 332] 10/11
The NATO forces secured a 'remarkable victory' at the beginning of June 1999, forcing the the Serbs to retreat, and finally stopping their genocidal attacks and ethnic cleansing, which Corbyn had evidently wanted to continue. 11/11
