This is an interesting observation, and causes me to wonder if there are any countries the US has net emigration to if you normalize flows by population.

(Off top of my head, many more Japanese folks in US than vice versa, absolutely or normalized, esp if you back out military.)
Keeping myself honest: was right, approximately ~400k Japanese-origin immigrants in US and ~100k US-origin immigrants in Japan.

(Not clear to me what percentage of the second number live in Japan as a function of US military presence; historically that was a high percentage.)
Which works out to 0.32% versus 0.03% (treat like napkin math).
