1/ Who said “The #EuropeanCommission [economic] analyses were too numerous, often inaccurate, analytically poor, and marginal?”
A thread on the economic analysis at the EC, and especially #multicountry #modelling, based on our new paper with Antonella Rancan and @jcaacostamacia ImageImage
2/ The quote is from Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, head of the Commission Directorate for Financial and Economic Affairs (the “DG II”, or "Ecofin") from 1979 to 1983. In the quote, Padoa-Schioppa is describing the state of things at the DG II in 1979, when he took office. ImageImage
3/ For Padoa-Schioppa, the EC needed more “professionalism” when conducting economic analysis, in order to persuade national policymakers and hence to steer the course of national economic policies. ImageImage

Finally made 5k 🎉

Thanks all, been sitting at 4.9 for a while 🙇‍♂️.

Probably have @AnalystNik11 to thank for the latest influx even though all I did was show how to use a simple macro 😅.

To celebrate here's a short thread, new followers I promise they're usually better 👇🥝!
Ever wondered how the 🥝 calculates team strengths but been too afraid to ask?

Well some other people asked for you, so here's what I told them!

(I will eventually get round to a nicer more detailed thread but I figured this would still be useful)

Here is my explanation in DMs. There are a few more tweets worth of screenshots 😅!

The main thing I anticipate questions about is "how do you account for X change using only past data?"

Every question of that format is answered by "using odds" 🎲🙃.

What is driving the FS Industry to invest more in #GRC &/or ERM Technology?
@irmglobal @IRMIowl @ERMAcademy
Let me try to answer this question in a generalized manner. So, its applicability extends beyond banks, risk insurance and asset management firms.
I think ERM Systems and/or the GRC Systems have now become more regulation oriented across different legal compliance jurisdictions.
Kindly, do note that the ERM/ GRC Models being used are not always the same. Different Industries identify, measure and apply risk controls in an entirely different manner from one another.

So, 30 hours of battery storage for $660 / kW comes down to $22 / kWh.

That's less than one tenth of the cost of today's leading $300 / kWh Tesla "Megapack" utility battery storage product. 🤔
#modelling #assumptions #magicalthinking #antinuclearism
Why am I challenging Dr. Clack?

Because he is selling antinuclear have-your-cake-and-eat-it renewable energy studies that he asserts "find" least-cost energy systems with little or no nuclear energy, while in fact he simply assumes it, hidden in the fine print of his papers.
Note how I try to evaluate Clacks storage cost assumption by comparing to the *best* current storage cost quote I could find.

In his effort to support his nuclear cost assumptions, he refers to the *worst* project he could find.

This is not fine.

I am humbled and privilleged to note that my #Research paper; "Sources of #Unemployment in #Lesotho" is now available and can be accessed via the People's Republic of #China's National #Science and #Technology #Library - #NSTL. I give thanks 😎 Image
So far this year, I have successfully published three #Research articles in #Macroeconomics & #Finance, with another two in press. I am currently hammering away at a handful of working papers which will most certainly find a home in reputable #Journals, come 2021 🙏🏽🙂 Image
Im currently internalising the very insightful reviewer comments on my latest #Research paper titled; "Investigating Determinants of Commercial Bank Spreads in #Lesotho", from the good folks over at the globally reputable #International #Journal of #Finance & #Economics #IJFE 😊 ImageImage

1/Today, we launch a new project: defining & analysing a series of global & country-level #ParisAgreement-compatible #decarbonisation benchmarks, across four major sectors: #Power, #Transport, #Industry, #Buildings, each w benchmarks for several indicators bit.ly/CAT_PSR1 Image
2/ We've derived 2030 & 2050 sectoral benchmarks for seven countries: #Brazil, #China, #EU, #India, #Indonesia, #SouthAfrica, the #US, taking into account each country's technical, infrastructure & economic circumstances #decarbonisation. Summary report: bit.ly/CAT_PSRsum
3/ Our benchmarks are at a level of “highest plausible ambition" - technically, economically feasible, consider existing infrastructure, ensure they push the boundaries on all levels, & increase our chances of meeting the #ParisAgreement #1o5C limit bit.ly/CAT_PSRsum

1/ Founder Puzzles. Cover stories. Part III

We all know the drill by now. Short listed frame from the cover. Followed by the story behind the cover.

This one is obviously a beach. But that is not the story

2/ I have always been a sucker for beaches.

For the longest time I wanted to rent a beach villa for a month and write a book.

Wake up in the morning, grab a run, grab some breakfast and inspiration, sit down and write.

Repeat until book or rent is done.
3/ This was before I knew that most beaches on our side of the planet are warm, hot and humid.

Those on the other side are too cold for warm blooded desi wannabe authors..

Also sand isn't exactly great for laptops.

I need your help. I want to know from modellers in all areas what we need from a (any) Government #COVIDー19 model (which will predict numbers and timing of infections and will drive national policy). Please share and we will croudsource a requirements list
I'd like to crowd source our requirements for the model (parameters, validation, assumptions, code) - and I'd like to help from all #modelling ( #simulation / #economic / #policy / #epidemiological / #behavioral ) experts in putting together our requirements. I'll start.

Lets talk about #Oil and #Inflation and whether the relationship is #Linear or #NonLinear...
We have all been witness to the recent volatility in the #Global #Oil markets. We have seen how disruptions in oil #Supply, be it from #SaudiArabia, #Nigeria, #Venezuela, #Iran or #Libya can cause upticks in the global #Price of oil...
On the same token, we are aware how muted #oil #demand can arise from a slow down in #global #growth. For e.g. a persistent slowdown in #China often translates into a softening of global oil prices. Similarly, high #inventories & the impact of #US #shale drives down prices...

General tips from my experience in obtaining biomedical sciences research #fellowships/funding as a computational/mathematical scientist, and having gone through hundreds of applications as committee member @wellcometrust, @TheBHF, @NC3Rs, @The_MRC, #STEM, #WomenInSTEM:
1. Success generally comes after failure. Every time I've been awarded a fellowship, I had a painful rejection first. Analyse the rejection and act to overcome it. You will need advice and clear thinking (and some time to recover).
2. Ask yourself why you really want a fellowship and remember this reason through the ups and downs of the process. Fellowships are a very good way to combine a scientific career and a young family, for example.
