I know this may come as a shock to many, but you can find both the Iranian gov & US gov corrupt. It’s possible. You can understand that the internet block in Iran is deeply horrid while knowing that US sanctions have been blocking Iranians from internet services for yrs already.
Bc of the internet block I’ve been trying to buy calling cards to contact fam & friends. It hasn’t been working. And thanks to US sanctions, I also can’t call/contact using google voice or other US-based services. If you want to talk about communications block, blame the USA too
The protests in Iran are due to the gov’s mismanagement of funds (specifically gas prices this time), widespread corruption, and a deeply crippling economic situation that has been only exacerbated and intensified by US sanctions and affect every Iranian, every single day.
To see the situation in Iran as an isolated dictatorship acting alone is naïve & dangerous. The US has been deeply invested in regime change to benefit its own regional & economic interests for DECADES. Pls contextualize, complicate & understand the world is not black & white.
If you give a damn about Iranians, there is something that you can do: fight sanctions. Don’t normalize crippling sanctions against Iran as okay or a peaceful alternative to war. My ppl are dying on all fronts: by the Iranian state, by the US state, and by the world’s apathy.
This is a really great article by @jonletman that eloquently lays out some of the threads of the US-Iran relationship and how central the US's role is in the current economic protests, with important quotes from @NIACouncil's @SinaToossi. truthout.org/articles/inten…
@jonletman @NIACouncil @SinaToossi "Even as the United States spends over $1.2 trillion to modernize and expand its own nuclear arsenal, Trump has vowed maximum pressure will prevent Iran from developing nuclear technology. Over the summer, as tensions soared, Trump threatened to obliterate parts of Iran."
@jonletman @NIACouncil @SinaToossi People don't realize that the US's incredibly hardline and morally absent positions toward Iran do nothing but embolden the hardliner politicians in the Iranian government. The rhetoric from both governments feed off of each other, with Iranian people suffering under it all.
