Told that the measures in the Labour manifesto are Remain compliant, indeed consistent with either result of a new referendum. There were some doubts expressed in civil service about 2017 manifesto compatibility with EEA & EU, esp mail renationalisation...
some areas though where there it is a matter of legal judgement. Eg my thread yesterday on the foie gras ban. It is reasonable assume that it would be easier in Brexit situation, would be challenged if we were still in EU, but many legal experts saw as doable under Article 36
Ie I’d expect to see some policies that more assertively test boundaries of what is possible under EU law, something Labour leadership thinks previous Governments did not do...blog coming.

Public finances baseline matters too. Eg Lab could surely not assume Libdem “remain bonus”

Brexit leak to FT: officials say NI protocol “major” challenge, ponders “not being able to deliver” it by next Dec

Cons claim is that they can negotiate a UK-EU Free Trade deal, ratify across multiple Parliaments and implement too incl complex NI checks/rebates within 11 months
In a similar vein though, Labour says it can do a new negotiation of the withdrawal deal/ future relationship, by March, and then simultaneously legislate a Withdrawal and Referendum Act, for a new plebiscite by June, which can be immediately implemented...
Replies pointing out that the very tight Labour timetable possible if staying in single Market and Customs Union - perhaps - but Labour hasn’t been clear about this being their precise option.

Either way main parties 2020 Brexit calendars “done” or “sorted” looking optimistic

Not surprising - thought they both made very different cases clearly - and v well chaired by @bbcnickrobinson ... also take your pick on interpreting this poll / either Corbyn didn’t get the clear win he needed, or overperformed on these numbers versus current polling etc.

More details - as with last time Johnson shaded on “who performed best overall” weighted to 2017 GE and 2016 ref numbers. But net scores on who individually did “well or badly” better for Corbyn... Johnson: +24 (62/38) Corbyn: +38 (69/31)

These two slides basically say that the May Brexit deal had commitments to “unfettered access” for NI traders to the rest of the UK, & no tariffs, quotas or Rules of Origin from GB to NI. Johnson renegotiation now depends on interpretations of “unfettered access”...

This is some really dumb shit right here and proof that Mason should never, ever be listened to about anything, by anybody ever again. If this guy tells you the sky is blue he'd even get that wrong. There follows a thread on why he's totally full of shit.
Let us start 4 years ago. Back then Mason was arguing the case for leaving the EU. As late as May 2016 Mason was still making arguments for leave but was already building his false case that a leave vote was what the ruling class really desired.

Masons case against leaving the EU has always been built on a series of bad faith arguments that depend upon a conception of both neo-liberalism and the economy of Britain that are utterly fraudulent. Unfortunately he was able to get away with these lies.

But the #LibDems can't #RevokeArticle50 unless they win the election. In 2017 they won 12 seats. They need 326 MPs to win. How many do they need to claim a mandate to #Revoke?
Maybe the #LibDems can form a minority government?
Could a minority government #RevokeArticle50? Even for that the #LibDems would need at least 200 seats. And what other parties would they then need for success? The #SNP might vote to #RevokeArticle50, but would they be enough?

I love the book 1984. It's a great work of art which will outlive everyone who reads these words. However, it can become a millstone for those who read it, the inevitability of it all is bad for morale.

Hence I advocate "Orwell's Oversight".
I've pitched the concept in the broadest possible sense:

Any instance where the official line is publicly contradicted. Orwell suggested a society of citizens, constantly watched and controlled. Instead we live in a world where everyone is watched by everyone else.
1984 is a victim of its own success. A vision so compelling it has enchanted many, including those in positions of power, but to mistake it for reality is to live in an oppressive fiction.

Liberation is in the fact the internet's all-seeing-eye works both ways; we can see them.

How about a #Remain manifesto, agreed & promoted by all major Remain groups? #RemainManifesto

The purpose would be to explain how, if we Remain, we can address Leave's concerns and can commit a future govnt to enact them, to the letter. 1/20
The manifesto could address the main reasons we have been told for the Leave vote.

It could focus purely on the key areas - immigration, sovereignty, EU federal plans, EU wastefulness.
It could detail precise ways in which we can protect ourselves from these concerns. 2/20
hy not compromise by changing Britain as it is today, but not by leaving the EU? And save the cost & risk of Brexit.

But I think we should only address the areas directly detailed as being the reasons for the Leave vote. Not what we suspect may be underlying. 3/20
