Today I learned that nothing is impossible in a democracy.
For today the people of Hong Kong overwhelmingly handed one lever of government power to the anti-establishment pan-democratic faction.

For the first time since British territorial governor Mark Aitchison Young introduced the idea of elections for Hong Kongers in 1947, the democratic camp have a semblance of power, winning control of at least 17 of 18 Hong Kong’s District Councils.

While the establishment pro-Beijingers still control Hong Kong’s highest legislative body (the Legislative Council, aka LegCo, or 立法會), this is still an achievement akin to what the Alberta NDP achieved in 2015.

As Jack Layton once said, “never let them tell you it can’t be done.” The democratic camp in Hong Kong was told they could never win. My, how bigly did they win today.
And we centrist/progressive Albertans can win bigly too.

That is how we win. Never let anyone tell you it can’t be done; because we can get it done, and we will get it done.

七十二年後，泛民主派唔單止贏咗一個區域議會控制權，最初嘅評估話泛民派有機會可以贏到十八個區議會內十七個議會嘅控制權。
七十幾年嚟一來冇權冇力，一晚就改變。
不過今日嘅成果，係愛民主嘅香港人花咗無數心血贏返嚟。
