The Trump administration tried and failed to pass this policy in Congress. So it is using executive power to strip people of benefits by burying them in red tape - 88% of people who would lose benefits earn less than $600 a month. 1/
The Trump administration passed an executive order to impose work requirements on benefits that the poor need, such as Medicaid and SNAP. They are unwinding the welfare state via administrative burdens. 2/
We already know how this is going to work based on the preview provided by work requirements in Medicaid. These are not work requirements - they are work *reporting* requirements. Lots of people will lose benefits b/c they struggle with red tape 3/
The purpose of programs like SNAP is not to force people into the labor market. That is not a mission in its statute and Congress has rejected that goal as recently as last year! 4/ nbcnews.com/news/us-news/n…
Work requirements are also an ineffective way of increasing labor market participation. See this summary: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1023263… 5/
If the Trump administration cares about increasing labor force participation and self-sufficiency among the poor, best evidence says they would be increasing rather than reducing access to SNAP, which increases economic self-sufficiency. 6/ heartlandalliance.org/policy-and-adv…
Also - those coverage loss numbers are likely underestimates because they focus on eligibility but ignore the effects of administrative burdens on excluding those who are eligible but struggle with reporting requirements 7/
