It was a game widely played among nobles and soldiers (the only ones who can permit to maintain a horse) and was seen a(n informal) status of one's military and/or viril abilities.

Kyôkku, then, evolved into the child play chach'igi 자치기 ("hitting the 'cha' stick"), with simpler rules and without the necessity of mounting a horse. Worth saying that before that a version of Kyôkku on feet already existed:
