I’m with a bunch of analysts and press for @Cisco’s #internetforthefuture event in San Fran. Here we go.
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins: Drone delivery, autonomous cars, business video, etc., all driving a capacity issue as we head toward 49 billion connected devices. #internetforthefuture
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins Robbins says #internetforthefuture needs more capacity, more speed, and mitigation of operational costs.
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins @ChuckRobbins says mobile devices will have 1 Gbps in a couple years, will put a lot of pressure on backbone. Cisco’s #internetforthefuture is about building a high-capacity, low-OpEx backbone. In other words, super-routers.
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins Chuck says Cisco wants customers to consume this new tech any way they want to. Router disaggregation. #internetforthefuture
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins 5 years and $1 billion in R&D is behind this #internetforthefuture launch. And here comes David Goeckeler.
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins And he brings up Ben Havey, VP of Tech, Innovation at Disney. Hmm, is Disney+ relying on these new routers? #internetforthefuture
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins Disney has been working with Cisco for a couple years in its "innovation lab" called StudioLAB. connectivity, AI, etc. #internetforthefuture
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins Goeckeler: R&D investment has been in software, silicon and optics for this #internetforthefuture. cisco says its been innovating on all three of these and brought them together for this launch.
@Cisco @ChuckRobbins What is the launch?
Cisco Silicon One ASIC
Cisco 8000 Series router
Optics for 400G and beyond
Flexible business models

@Cisco @ChuckRobbins Cisco says it built one networking asic that meets requirements of all parts of the internet. #internet
Cisco says it built one networking asic that meets requirements of all parts of the internet. Cisco Silicon One. #internetforthefuture
Eval Dagan, Cisco SVP Silicon Engineering says goal was to:
Build one router architecture covering all market segments
Build routing chips with the same efficiencies as switch chips
#internetforthefuture
Cisco Silicon One has full feature set of a carrier grade routing chip that is as power-efficient or more efficient than switch chips.
Q100 router is shipping now with Silicon One chip.
- Global router scale, deep buffering, P4 programmable w/ switching efficiency
- More than 2x bandwidth and 3x packets per second over other platforms
- First platform to break 10 tbps w/ switch-like power efficiency of switches
but the star router platform today is the Cisco 8000 Series, which is launching today. #internetforthefuture
8000s series, shipping to select customers since October, ranges from fixed platform at 10.8 Tbps to 260 Tbps in an 18-slot chassis.
New IOS XR7 for 8000 series is developed for better operations.
50% less memory footprint
50% faster boot time
40% smaller image sizes
40% faster download
AT&T Chris Rice, SVP Network Cloud & Infrastructure, now talking about running IOS XR7 on white box routers.
- looking to increase capacity of core routers by 16x
- steering the ship toward one strategy - SDN, tooling, etc.
Facebook Dan Rabinovitsj, VP Connectivity says Cisco is becoming a merchant silicon supplier today, so I guess it is selling chips directly to companies like Facebook. I didn't notice that in the PR
Silicon One ASIC is going into Open Compute Project, which means ODMs can use it to build systems.

The 8000 series hardware will run Sonic OS, Microsoft's open source NOS.
Cisco's Optics strategy is too complex to tweet but one highlight: Cisco will qualify its optics to run on white box and competitors' platforms. positioning itself as a neutral optics supplier for its customers. #internetforiran
Q100 is the first generation of the silicon One ASIC. Not a router. Sorry.
