A group called Engage Texas are sending out paid political ads that look like voter registration cards to folks around Texas. Who's behind Engage Texas? yourstephenvilletx.com/news/20191212/…
They are a Federal SuperPAC who took in $9.5 million from 22 donors between April and June 2019 in their only filing with the Federal Ethics Commission.
The majority of the 22 donors are also those who are behind Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) and their PAC. I've included screenshots below showing the top 20 donors to TLR during the 2018 election cycle. Compare it to the Engage Texas PAC in the tweet above
The ridiculously wealthy behind Texans for Lawsuit Reform and Engage Texas may not be the mustache twirling bad guys like Empower Texans, but make NO MISTAKE, they are doing everything they can to buy our state, not because they care about you or me.
Those behind Texans for Lawsuit Reform and Engage Texas want control, power, and the ability to make as much money as they want, doing it however they can, consequences to you and I be damned. And they are willing to use deceptive means to make it happen.
Feedback I’ve gotten says these cards will actually register folks to vote. The form itself looks legit. So the “why are they doing this”, how are they getting their lists to mail to, and just how much are they spending to do this, are all good questions for another day.
An update on the Engage Texas political ad voter registration mailers I posted about earlier. Feedback below is from a friend who discussed the voter registration cards with an elections administrator
The cards are legit and will register voters. The bar codes on the mailers are the right ones for the county registrars office. But here is the rub. Because the cards are postage paid, the county is paying the postage for every one of these cards that get sent back.
Word is that MANY of the returned cards are for folks who are already registered to vote, but due to getting the mailer went ahead and sent it in to cover their bases. That means we, the taxpayers, are the ones covering a large portion of this activity. That’s not OK.
The list that Engage Texas is utilizing for their mass mailing doesn’t seem to be very discriminating, as dead people and a whole lot of Democrats are receiving the mailing.
My best guess is that Engage has lots of money, has paid for a list that someone pulled together scraped from social media / Facebook type info, never checking it against the actual registered voter logs, and started sending out mailers.
The stated goal of Engage Texas is to register large numbers of “conservative” voters to offset the gains that Democrats have made in new voters over the past few years. The big money in Texas, those behind Texans for Lawsuit Reform are scared for 2020. They should be.
