4/ Before I decide who to back for leader I'll want to see the candidates learning lessons ... and I want a contest fast - no delays and attempts to rig the rules... I want a left-led party prepared to accept Brexit and reconfigure our politics around the new facts
5/ Later today my e-pamphlet analysing the result and setting out a modernised left social-democratic agenda for the party beyond Corbynism will be published online.

Strange article in Guardian by @owenhatherley goves the impression I am calling for Milne, Murphy etc to be expelled from Labour post-election. I called for them to be removed as advisers in May. I was right (see election result)... Image
Now on the use of "Stalinist" -if someone thinks the USSR was a great place and tends to parrot Kremlin disinformation, or wears a Stalin badge, or runs a Facebook page making light of the Gulag... I think Stalinist is a good description...
... and as I warned in May: British Stalinism has an unenviable record - it destroys every movement it ever gains control of. Now for the word "Trotskyist"... I was a Trotskyist in the 80s/90s but that's not the reason I opposed Brexit!...

THREAD: Here's my checklist for judging the Labour leadership candidates. 1/ They have to be from the left - there can be no going back to free market authoritarian politics... (full list below)
2/ They voted against Brexit. Brexit is an attack on the working class, the welfare state and ethnic minorities. I want some one who consistently understood this, anyone saying Lexiteers were right doesn't get my vote...
3/ Accepts Brexit will happen and we have to move on... the size of the defeat means "rejoining" is not a left project. We need to defend European values, trade orientation, common standards and security co-operation - but we can't become the "rejoin" party...

2/ So it wasn't the "Remainer left" who tanked Labour's poll average from 32 to 22 in six weeks. But it was the internationalist left who - for four months - had to fight to get to the position that allowed the squeeze on Libdem votes...

Interesting analysis about the elections. "There was no real groundswell of support for Boris Johnson [and Tories]. They improved their share of the vote by less than 2% overall, losing over a million Remainers but gaining more Leave voters. " 1/ dataprax.is/tory-landslide…
The Tories did well by taking votes from the Brexit party. So that means that Farage (i.e. a right-wing xenophobe and fraudster who shorted the market on the EU Ref) was the kingmaker 2/

Here are the seats where Labour lost by less than 1000 votes and the other Remain parties won thousands of votes, up significantly in every seat from 2017: Bury North. Kensington. Bolton North East. Bury South. High Peak. Heywood and Middleton. Stoke-on-Trent Central. (Continues)
Gedling. Blyth Valley. Delyn. 10 seats in total with majorities of <1000, mostly majority Leave seats, where Labour Remainers switching helped put the Tories in. But that’s not all. In the next 12 seats, the Tories won by 1000-2000 votes & other Remain party voters exceeded this:
North West Durham. Bridgend. Chipping Barnet. Clywd South. Chingford & Woodford Green and Burnley (the only two with a tighter squeeze in 2019 - both still with massive LD votes). Dewsbury. West Bromwich East. Birmingham Northfield. Wolverhampton South West. Vale of Clywd (contd)

This is fascinating. Whilst 700k-800k 2027 Lab Leave voters switched to Tory, 1.2 mill Lab Remain voters switched to remain parties.

So did 200k-250k Lab Leave voters. Bregretters?

As a former journalist who just worked on progressive campaigns during this election; there are a couple of basic truths that it is important for UK progressives to accept otherwise we will condemn ourselves to an unending spiral of failure and bitterness. #thread
Firstly; #Labour didnt lose because the media was against it. This might feel like a warm blanket in the post-election freezing wind, but it’s crap. The way digital information has developed means that narratives are mostly formed online before the papers magnify them
We dont live in the 1970s, 20 million people dont watch Panorama every week (trust me, i worked there), newspaper readership is falling; and - vitally - most people now form views on issues based on what friends and family say online. There is academic work on this. Check it out.

Turnout at 67.3%, slightly down. Main takeaways: (1) massive victory for the Conservatives, (2) collapse of Labour votes and seats, (3) further divergence of Scotland (SNP rise) and Northern Ireland (no unionist majority)
The large Conservative lead (11.4pp) translated in a comfortable majority of seats (365 out of 650) and scores of wins in the "red wall" in central-northern England (but losses in Scotland)
