What does 'taking back control' after #brexit mean - a short cautionary (fishy) tale - with assistance from Pew campaign to end over fishing @Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot 1/thread
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot The story starts seven years ago when the EU made a commitment to end overfishing by 2020 - but this week EU minsters decided to keep on overfishing. That is, allow more fish to be taken out of the see than the independent advice says is sustainable /2

@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot To be fair, there has been marginal improvement since then, but too much is still too much...and the crazy part is, if you stop overfishing stocks recover pretty quick. And in the medium-run, there's more fish to catch.

The Greenies are trying to MAXIMISE catch here/3
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot And we've just seen, with North Sea Cod what happens when you overfish.

It got a 'blue tick' in 2017 - then the fishermen piled back in - and now levels are back in the dangerzone. So its losing its tick again. /4

@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot You can still eat 'cod n chips' with cod source from Barents and other seas where it remains plentiful.

North Sea Cod quotas were just cut by 51% for next year - but that's 10 per LESS - than the science demanded. So a downward spiral, but a shallower one.

SO..../5
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot WHAT happens after Brexit, when we leave the Commons Fisheries Policy (CFP) and 'take back control' of our fisheries...good question which I asked to Andrew Clayton @bejustnfearnot.

Well, he said the UK *could be* a strong voice in ending over-fishing...OR it could not! SO.../6
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot Any clues which one it will be?

Well there is ONE clue, and it's not encouraging.

Earlier this year when the government drafted a new Fisheries Bill it originally said it would copy over EU's commitment in CFP to end over-fishing.

Then something happened.../7
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot Apparently under pressure from the fishing industry, the commitment was watered down... see this

pewtrusts.org/en/research-an…

...and this from @CrispinDowler unearthed.greenpeace.org/2019/01/24/gre… /8
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot @CrispinDowler This doesn't exactly inspire confidence...and indeed on an EU-wide basis, the UK is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to pushing for non-sustainable fishing quotas..see this from @ClientEarth /9

documents.clientearth.org/wp-content/upl…
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot @CrispinDowler @ClientEarth One idea is to take this issue to the European Court of Justice - see this from @ClientEarth legal eagle @Goetschalckx_N - it won't fix the problem now...but may make it harder next time.
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot @CrispinDowler @ClientEarth @Goetschalckx_N Here's what @Goetschalckx_N had to say on prospects for an ECJ case....but since UK leaving the EU and the jurisdiction of ECJ, not sure what the direct effect on UK would be.

So here's the think about 'taking back control'.../11
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot @CrispinDowler @ClientEarth @Goetschalckx_N If you have 'control' of the vehicle, and you crash it...you have take the blame too.

No hiding behind those nasty eurocrats or pesky Spanish/French (delete as appropriate) fisherman.

After #Brexit we can use the control. Or abuse it. /12
@Pew_EU @bejustnfearnot @CrispinDowler @ClientEarth @Goetschalckx_N There's a lots of brave talk around about Global Britain adhering to the highest possible standards etc...but if the #Brexit journey gets choppy, there will need to be some careful scrutiny to ensure they don't get tossed overboard.
