I’m sharing these images because I’ve seen several tweets claiming that the interracial marriage depicted in the BBC’s #ChristmasCarol (set in 19th century) is PC nonsense & historically inaccurate

This is Jack Johnson and his wife Etta Terry Duryea, January 27, 1910. Jack was a successful boxer and a performer for theatre companies.
Louis Gregory and Louisa Mathews Gregory.
Charles Meehan, an Irishman and his wife Hester Meehan, who was born in Canada.
This couple from South Texas pose together for a photo taken in 1900.
An Edwardian couple on their wedding day in the 1900s
Joseph Phillippe Lemercier Laroche with his wife Juliette and and their two children Marie and Louis.
Frederick Douglass with his wife Helen Pitts Douglass, right, and her sister Eva Pitts, centre, circa 1880s.
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor with his wife Jessie Walmisley and their two children. Samuel was an English composer and conductor of mixed-race heritage who married an Englishwoman.
There are also MANY examples of interracial marriages in 19th century marriage records. To depict this in modern television adaptation is completely accurate. If you are claiming it isn’t, maybe ask yourself why you tweeted that instead of doing a 10 second basic google search
I’m loving people tweeting more evidence of interracial marriages throughout history. Keep them coming and thank you to everyone for sharing - especially those sharing family history. It is both touching & greatly appreciated. X
