'Time bomb':

regions most sensitive to changes in climate include humid and wet areas (Amazon, Indonesia, parts of central Africa). In some of these areas, it could take *less* than 10 years for climate change to fully impact groundwater flows.

2°C by 2036 (as suggested by Michael Mann in 2014) has been looking increasingly likely to me for some time, and a few months ago major new IPCC climate models were released suggesting 2°C was all but inevitable and that it would hit by 2040.

Governments and corporations are committing crimes against humanity and nature by knowingly preparing the production of enough fossil fuels in the next decade to cause the destruction of most species.

A range (incomplete so far) of the most recent IPCC models shows 2°C by 2040, followed by 3°C- 4°C around 2060- 2080.

If this is correct, humans face a staggering, almost unthinkable catastrophe within decades.

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart

People do not usually realize this, but of all the planetary boundaries, the most shocking one is land over-use, where the world currently uses land in a deteriorating manner at 5x what the stocks, sinks, replacements, etc., can handle.
Poor land use directly causes, catalyzes and/or conditions several of the other 9 planetary boundaries--climate change, ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, nitrogen-phosphorus disruption, water over-use, & less so aerosol loading & chemical pollution.
The latter two (plus the final one--the ozone) are primarily generated by the military-industrial complex, consumer goods/services, heavy capital, etc., this makes them related to land over use, but still relatively distinct issues.

this is a long thread on #nauru, where i spent last week. nauru is currently most visible as a site for australia’s offshore detention of asylum seekers and refugees. it is also the location of a longstanding #phosphate mine which covers over 2/3 of the island 1/22
#nauru is experiencing considerable #climatechange. im going to outline some of the social-environmental stresses i observed that nauruans, refugees and asylum seekers are facing, and why we need to talk about #colonialism and #environmental racism for #climatejustice 2/22
#nauru is a beautiful island. its main resource is #phosphate. germany colonised nauru in the late 1800s and in the early 1900s the british found phosphate and started to exploit it for fertiliser and munitions with australia and nz, who became nauru’s trustees in the 1920s 3/22

Scientists are once again warning about #climate armageddon. Thousands vetted the best science out there. More extinction, death and disease is in store if we don't act fast.

But I think we should focus on something uncomfortable: for many people, this is meaningless. /1
Let’s be clear: the IPCC report is a tour de force. Over 90 scientists spent years writing it, based on over 6,000 peer reviews. It says the planetary warming ALREADY caused “will persist for centuries to millennia.” It says we’re not acting fast enough to cut pollution. /2
The report adds to the vast global scientific consensus, based on an overwhelming body of evidence, that we’re pushing the planet into DANGEROUS and destructive warming conditions, by burning fossil fuels at industrial scales, and dumping carbon pollution into the air. /3
