1/ An obligatory decade in review thread:

This was a decade of great personal and professional transformation. I did a bit of growing up and learnt some very valuable lessons.
2/ In this decade I went from being an author of children’s books to a game designer to running a company to becoming a product manager and an angel investor. I worked mostly across consumer tech (and a little bit of SaaS) in gaming, messaging, healthcare, education and media.
2.1/ E-com, fin-tech and mobility are left in the Indian consumer tech ecosystem ;)

Still super gung-ho about the India story and deeply committed to it.
3/ I got married and became a dad. Parenting is the single hardest thing I have ever done and I've learnt more about myself in the last 4 years than in the 33 years preceding it.

3.1/ Monday mornings, whining colleagues, long meetings, businesses not doing well, bad bosses, the pressures of building products and running teams - all seem so much easier when compared to a kid’s tantrum-led meltdown. (Terrible twos last way longer than you’d expect.)
3.2/ Key & Peele’s comedy provided sanity in the early days of being a parent - a thank you note to these two geniuses - @JordanPeele and @KeeganMKey is long overdue

5/ Reacquainted: Picked up coding again after 12 years - Python is great

6/ Truly learnt the importance of teaching and its place in completing the learning cycle.

I’ve been teaching regularly since the age of 15/16 and expect to get deeper into it soon.
7/ Built a thesis around the “Wisdom Economy” as opposed to the “Knowledge Economy”. Spoke about it at my alma mater IIT Madras:

1/ I've always been in awe of people who keep detailed quantitative records on themselves and their activities (blood glucose levels, exercise, sleep, etc).

I've kept track of the following: books that I've read and interviews I have taken.
2/ While a lot of people keep track of the books that they read, I've come across very few who keep track of every interview they have taken.

Here are the learnings/ observations/ insights from the 512 interviews I have taken over the last 108 months.
3/ All data (except for the last one year) is stored in anonymized form across Word, Excel, Google Docs and lately Bear App (what a fantastic product).

So if I interviewed you 7 years back, don't ask for feedback 😅 I might have the feedback but I wouldn't know it is for you.

1/ My first trip to China (Beijing and Hangzhou) was very insightful and left me in a state of euphoria. So it was important that I wait at least 10 days before putting down my impressions (to avoid recency bias).
2/ The first great thing that happened a couple of days before I was leaving was that both Alipay and Wepay allowed foreigners to create temporary bank accounts with pre-loaded cards so that they could easily transact all across China. I used zero cash on my entire trip!
3/ Armed with a smattering of Mandarin that I had picked up a couple of months back and Google Translate (one of the few Google apps allowed inside China), I found it relatively easy to walk around on my own and interact with people.

#Thread Ever since visiting Beallsville and my partner's Civil War ancestor's grave, I've been pondering what *my* family has lost, in known history, because of the Genocide.
My partner has taken me to many, many cemeteries around western PA, some of them dating to the 18th century, and been able to point them out as ancestors.

That's kind of incredible, to me.
The top of this thread has a picture of the restored interior of the St. Giragos church of Diyarbakir, in Turkey. My Bakkalian ancestors helped build that church. But past my great-grandfather's generation, I can't tell you what their names were, or where they're buried.

Okay first things: You may already be covered medically and saving money. How do you find this out? Look at your CTC in your appointment letter or your payslip

Do you have something called PF on it? That's a saving!

Did HR issue you an insurance card? That's your Mediclaim.
Things to ask: How much PF is being deposited into my account each month?

What's my sum insured? Is it just me who is covered or my dependents too?

e.g. You have 3 lacs for self plus dependents (parents/spouse/child). This means upto 3 lacs to be used by any of you per year
