good fact-checking is not just "hey this link exists on the internet."
NYT opinion columns, certainly racist chestnut ones, have plenty of time for an actual fact-check and edit. Not like a breaking news headline, for which I have a lot more sympathy for fuck-ups.
In the case of Stephens, who has fucked up repeatedly by confirming his own biases by linking to very very dubious and now racist sources, if you want to keep him on (why, idk) then more layers and rigor of editing and fact-checking seem an obvious way to avoid embarrassment.
But I guess now we know that an editor or two and a fact-checker didn't see anything wrong with a column that claimed Ashkenazi Jews are smarter than other people—including other Jews! 🤦♀️
