Compare the Johnson Government's refusal today to amend the WAB to require legislation to facilitate unfettered access for NI goods to the rest of the UK market with what May's government was saying almost exactly a year ago

On 9 January 2019, the UK Government published a paper setting out its commitments to to Northern Ireland and its integral place in the United Kingdom.

This included a commitment to 'strong protections in law that guarantee unfettered access for Northern Ireland businesses when placing goods on the rest of the UK market. It agreed to 'enshrine' this protection 'in primary legislation'
There was also the following commitment: "no divergence in the rules applied in Great Britain and Northern Ireland in areas covered by the Protocol".

65 years ago today, the UK entered into its first substantial contractual relationship with what has now become the European Union.

On 21 December 1954, the UK signed an Association Agreement with the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).

A short thread
Negotiations on an association agreement between the UK and the ECSC had started in November 1952.

The outcome of two years' negotiations was an agreement comprising just 15 articles and one three-page annex.

If a post-Brexit UK-EU agreement is - as anticipated - a 'mixed' agreement it will need to be ratified by all EU member states before it can come fully into force.

These two slides basically say that the May Brexit deal had commitments to “unfettered access” for NI traders to the rest of the UK, & no tariffs, quotas or Rules of Origin from GB to NI. Johnson renegotiation now depends on interpretations of “unfettered access”...

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
