Today I need to get something off my chest. I have woken up with a deep sense of anger towards those – especially in my own family – who voted for this shitshow known as Brexit. I’ve been angry for a long time, but events of yesterday have somehow pushed me over the edge. 1/
Learning that that the HoC has voted down supporting the rights of unaccompanied refugee children, their own right to scrutinise Brexit negotiations and especially to leave Erasmus (because it affects my kids directly) has somehow been the last straw. 2/
All policies completely unnecessary even in event of Brexit and can only be explained by weapons-grade stupidity and selfishness amongst those who support them. We have a class of politicians and people who don’t give a fuck about anyone, no matter how young or vulnerable. 3/
Let's remind ourselves this has been won by lies and dishonesty on an industrial scale, in 2016 but also in the recent GE and all points in between. (Who leaked Darroch memos? Why hasn’t Russia report been published?). In the name of our democracy they have killed democracy. 4/
And let us also remind ourselves that this is only the beginning. We have a govt that is corrupt and self-serving - very opposite of patriotic – and is going to trash everyone’s rights, as the economy stalls (it will) and as nationalist tensions increase within UK (they will). 5/
It will give me – and I suspect other Remainers (now Rejoiners) – little satisfaction (well, maybe a bit) to repeatedly say “I told you so” as the country becomes poorer, weaker and ultimately geographically smaller; as our kids’ opportunities are stolen from them. 6/
And these fuckwits are now talking about festivals of Brexit and shiny 50p Brexit coins! They are gloating! They don’t want to unite the country; they want this to be the beginning of something which anyone with a brain can see will be worse and more horrible. 7/
They dream of global Britain while taking away our dreams and making Britain more insular. They have delusions of grandeur fostered by childhoods watching black and white war movies. Why should progressives ever be reconciled to this? 8/
Not sure what my future holds – I’m 63 with a good career and exportable skills so maybe not too late to move somewhere not infected by the nationalist virus. Maybe there will be a way for Remainers to regroup and hold Brexiters for to account (I certainly hope so). 9/
Meanwhile, my heart is broken, my anger uncontainable, and I have a big family do coming up at which I will be expected to be polite to those who think they have won something (fuck knows what) and who have already smirked to my face about their ‘victory’. 9/
And the more I think about it, the more I wonder why I should have anything more to do with those who I am expected to associate with by accident of genetic relationship, but who have trashed all my values and everything I hold dear. Big decision. Need to sleep on it. 11/
If anyone has listened to this rant, thanks for taking the time. Hopefully getting it off my chest will blunt the pain for a few hours. Therapy by Twitter! I am not sure how I would have survived this far without all of you lovely Remainers out there.
