In her confirmation hearing, Chairman Neumayr agreed that climate change is real, that it’s a major issue for coastal states like Rhode Island, and that some of our most important financial institutions are warning about the dire threats it poses.

Now, she’s proposing to neuter the environmental law that ensures the government’s most consequential decisions account for the effects of climate change.
We didn’t need more proof that the fossil fuel industry has hardwired the Trump administration to deliver on its interests, but we got it anyway.

Well, “cognitive dissonance” sure is a nice way to say it. I’d just call a lie a lie. When has Big Oil NOT lied about climate change? What makes “we care about climate change” a more difficult lie to tell than “climate change isn’t real”?

Liars lie. It’s what they do.
It is ‘not for nothing’ that the real commitment comes from a European company, @RepsolWorldwide, that’s not infected with the U.S. curse of being able to use lies and money and front groups and political muscle to deny reality and corrode politics.

The most sober & pragmatic analysis I've seen is from Citi, showing the benefits of clean solutions outweigh costs.

But that's the business side.

Sadly, the political rhetoric is now unhinged, exaggerated, irresponsible hysteria.

1) Greta says "people are dying". Not exactly. Deaths from natural disasters have plummeted over past 100 years.

2) Greta says capitalism is the problem when its driven down pollution by subbing gas for oil/coal, driven innovation lowering solar, wind, battery & other alt costs.

The German government unveiled a major policy package to combat #climate change. The subsequent discussion in the German media shows the huge political and economic cost of a simple-minded focus on #carbon pricing – it’s the 1980s all over again! A Thread @BMF_Bund @JWMason1
The policy package contains a mix of mainly sensible measures: A slowly increasing carbon price, public investment (public trains), subsidies for switching to green technology, transfers to compensate “losers”, and a plan to move out of coal energy.
What happened in the subsequent media discussion is very interesting. As expected, there was critique of certain transfers and subsidies that some groups did not like (“waste of money”). Also, the opposition parties were critical – no surprise here.

Debate vs forum resolution will have a paper ballot & floor discussion by full committee of DNC (not just resolutions cmte)
@TomPerez It has gone from giving context to essentially Chairman Perez ghosting in his personal opinions/arguments on debate v forum.

Lots of vibes of "it's unfair to other important issues if we have a specific debate on one issue, but we have had lots of issue forums"
@TomPerez Climate Activists in guest section (where Im seated) are extremely frustrated, several pepper shouts of "we can't wait"

Unfortunately I think even w/15mins for each side of floor debate (while really generous & huge in a large committee context) will make activists feel ignored

Next Wednesday @CityofVancouver staff report back to #Council on ramping up our #ClimateAction, in line with the #IPCC science and in response to the #ClimateEmergency. Here’s my breakdown of the recommendations 👇
This #ClimateEmergency report outlines 6 Big Moves for Council to direct staff to pursue & come back w. comprehensive/costed plans. Plus 53 Accelerated Actions to move on now. The targets are strong & won’t be easy. This is what governing in line with the science looks like.
Big Move 1: By 2030, 90% of people will live within an easy walk/roll of their daily needs (we’re at 45%). Focused on land-use & complete n'hoods, it would ⬇️ 153,000 tonnes carbon/year, while creating ⬆️ housing choices, ⬆️ social interaction, and supporting local businesses.

My essay is only concerned with climate change-related damages in the US spurred, as I argue, by US actors like the oil majors. I could’ve written about Peruvian villagers suing a German energy giant & melting glaciers in the Andes, but that’s beyond the scope of my article.

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
