#Thread - Agriculture and forestry may be small sectors of the UK economy but they have an important role in delivering the UK’s Net Zero target. #NetZero will not be met without changes in how we use our land. (1/11)
The CCC’s previous work has shown it is possible to reduce land-based emissions of greenhouse gases while contributing to other strategic priorities for land such as climate change adaptation, food production and biodiversity. (2/11)
There is an urgent need for a new approach to land use UK-wide and the legislative opportunities for real change are here. Taking action now will create net benefits for the UK and ensure our land is more resilient to the changing climate. (3/11)
Agriculture and forestry account for 85% of the UK’s land area, most of which is used for farming. Our analysis balances the need to reduce land-based emissions with other essential functions of land, including maintaining food production. (4/11)
Our view of the scale of land-use change required to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 is consistent with the scenarios we developed for our Net Zero report in May 2019. (5/11)
Reducing emissions from UK land use & farming will require a range of actions, from increasing tree planting, adopting low-carbon farming practices, restoring peatlands, planting bioenergy crops and reducing food waste and consumption of the most carbon-intensive foods. (6/11)
The policy measures we identify in this report would release around one-fifth of the UK’s agricultural land for actions that reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration. (7/11)
In 2017, emissions from UK agriculture, land use and peatlands totalled 58 MtCO2e. With ambitious steps, emissions in these sectors can be reduced by 64% by 2050. (8/11)
A further 25 MtCO2e of annual emissions savings by 2050 can be delivered from using harvested material from trees and energy crops elsewhere in the economy, for example in conjunction with Carbon, Capture and Storage technologies in the energy sector. (9/11)
Our analysis shows that delivering our net-zero scenario for land use will require a total annual additional expenditure of £1.4 billion. However, the lifetime societal benefits of this will amount to £80 billion by 2050. (10/11)
The transition is complex, reaching across diverse agriculture sectors, actors and geographies. It requires a coordinated approach, led by Government throughout the UK. Those changes must start now. (11/11)
