In state and federal appeals, there are often 70+ pages of briefing to read, accompanied by a record of hundreds of pages

And yet oral argument usually takes 30 minutes - TOTAL - if it's granted at all

Why?

Everyone reads the briefs!
In the briefs, the legal arguments are made formally, with citations

Most cases can be resolved on the briefs

Oral argument hones in on areas of disagreement and ambiguity, where the judges and the lawyers go back and forth to get to the bottom of a tricky issue
But you know what judges hate?

When lawyers just re-read their briefs to them

Because it treats judges like morons, and there's nothing judges hate more than having their time wasted
In this case, the judges are Republican Senators

Adam Schiff and his team filed a 100+ page brief laying out their case

And now they are spending 24 HOURS OF TV TIME repeating what they said in the briefs

What a massive waste of time!

I'm not sure that Congress should even have the power to impeach a President

And that the power should be limited to impeaching federal judges not on the Supreme Court
The impeachment power has allowed the House - alone - to force the Senate to sit through a nonsense trial and hold everyone hostage for three years

Unclear that it should continue to exist
In our new, hyper-partisan world, there will be immense pressure WHENEVER the House is held by a different party than the President to push for impeachment proceedings

Better for the country that those energies be directed towards winning the next election

One very simple explanation for why the base has so uniformly rejected impeachment

Democrats, collectively, have never expressed even the slightest bit of loyalty to the Presidency as an OFFICE so long as it as been held by Donald Trump

They called themselves the RESISTANCE!
That, in and of itself, was a betrayal of the basic American contract

We have elections, and then we have peaceful transitions of power

Democrats breached that contract, and betrayed that trust, as did the #NeverTrump coalition
Now, Democrats and #NeverTrump accuse President Trump of betraying the country in Ukraine

Nonsense, of course

But more to the point - YOU ARE THE RESISTANCE. You are - by definition - disloyal! HOW DARE YOU try to use "loyalty" as an excuse for impeaching the President?

The most powerful argument against impeaching the President is the simple, textualist one: that "high crimes and misdemeanors" means what it says.

Crimes and Misdemeanors are violations of *established law*.

"High" refers to them being serious crimes against the state.
That's at the core of Pat Cipollone and the Trump team's argument.

Very, very simple.

You can't impeach someone for something that isn't a "crime."

Which means you can't make it up on the fly.
I've heard a few arguments from the Democrats about why this simple, plain reading of the Constitutional text shouldn't apply.

First, they rely on Alexander Hamilton's Federalist 65 to argue that they only need prove an "abuse of power."

Nonsense.

Oral argument is underway before the 2nd Circuit in Trump v. Vance & you can listen in on @cspan. Trump argues he cannot be investigated or prosecuted while President, so country DA in NY cannot use a grand jury to obtain evidence including his taxes.
@cspan A Judge is now asking Trump lawyers why, even assuming the President is immune from indictment, he should be immune from investigation. "This is just a grand jury subpoena."
@cspan Judge is now questioning about the opinion in the Nixon tapes case. The position Trump takes is directly in contradiction to that ruling of the Supreme Court that Nixon had to hand over tapes from the oval office.

As the work on building Amravati, the new capital city AP, comes to a grinding halt, concerns emerge about Amravati (APCRDA) bonds held by Franklin MF (~Rs. 1000 Cr) and Birla MF (Rs. ~300 Cr). Thread 1/11
During the Chandrababu Govt, Amravati received political as well as financial patronage. Now, with Jagan Reddy being incharge of the state, the project is in shambles. World Bank & ADB pulled out of the project and the Government is looking for reasons to scrap it. 2/n
The bonds issued to support the financing needs of the project were subscribed by Franklin MF and Birla MF. The bonds are guaranteed by the AP Govt but it's not sure if the Govt would keep servicing the bonds. The risk of lending to a state govt has again come to the fore. 3/11

Courts begin (and end) their principal analysis of such issues by examining an underlying tax law, code, rule, or regulation.

Federal tax revenues alone in 2014 were $3.02 trillion. So despite the fact legal immigrants made up 13+% of the 2014 US population, their total contribution, including state + local, was equivalent to just 10.8% of federal tax revenues?

Btw total fed/state/local tax revenues in 2014 were like $5 trillion, so if he's counting total instead of mere federal tax revenues from immigrants, 13% of the population only provided 6.6% of total tax revenues. If he's also counting illegals in his tax revenues, then just lol
