One very simple explanation for why the base has so uniformly rejected impeachment

Democrats, collectively, have never expressed even the slightest bit of loyalty to the Presidency as an OFFICE so long as it as been held by Donald Trump

They called themselves the RESISTANCE!

That, in and of itself, was a betrayal of the basic American contract

We have elections, and then we have peaceful transitions of power

Democrats breached that contract, and betrayed that trust, as did the #NeverTrump coalition

Now, Democrats and #NeverTrump accuse President Trump of betraying the country in Ukraine

Nonsense, of course

But more to the point - YOU ARE THE RESISTANCE. You are - by definition - disloyal! HOW DARE YOU try to use "loyalty" as an excuse for impeaching the President?

You can't build an entire movement around *disloyalty* and then expect those you have betrayed to simply accede to your concern-trolling

All that does is reinforce the in-group loyalty among Trump voters

And when you put forward the most flagrant "traitors," to extend the metaphor - people like Tom Nichols, Jennifer Rubin, Rick Wilson, Bill Kristol...to "shame" those who are loyal

Well, you cement that in-group loyalty even further

Long story short - the #NeverTrump Republicans prattle on about "honor" while ignoring their profound betrayal of the voters they claimed to represent

And then wonder why President Trump has the complete support of the base

There was some absolutely asinine op-ed in NRO from Kat Timpf about how terrible it was that Republican groups stopped supporting Justin Amash

Justin Amash betrayed his supporters in a fundamental way. OF COURSE he lost Republican support.

Loyalty matters!
