There are basically two reasons for space colonization:

1) Spread the species throughout the cosmos so we're not vulnerable to a one-planet extinction event

2) Reset our kludgey institutions by starting afresh with a new society

(of course, neither of these makes sense)
If we're going to actually colonize space, and take advantage of either one of these opportunities, we will need at least one of the following:

1) uploading ourselves into self-replicating machines

2) almost incomprehensibly better energy technology, probably fusion-based
Thus, I recommend that we continue trying to work on our Earthly problems while simultaneously pushing technology forward, and then colonize space only when one or both of the aforementioned miracle technologies becomes available.
