1. A cow is inseminated (mostly artificially) and a calf is born

#DitchDairy #VeganLandMovementCIC #Vegan #Wildlife #extinction #climate #ClimateEmergency
2. The calf is taken & either killed within 48 hours, sent to become veal or fattened up for 'beef' or in the case of females to become a future milk production line.
3. Female cows are milked en masse daily and then slaughtered when they can no longer produce. Their lives are short and horrific.

There's a lot of #badnews about #biodiversity and #conservation at the moment, so how about some #conservationoptimism? 🧵 based on our new paper pnas.org/doi/full/10.10… and some awesome recent work by others... 1/
As you probably know, the world has ambitious targets to protect 17% of the world's land for #biodiversity #conservation, and there are calls to increase this to anywhere between 26-60% in the next round of @UNBiodiversity talks (this year) 2/
In theory, this is great for biodiversity (more on the human impacts later). Problem is that the total area of land that you protect may not be important: a lot of #protectedareas are small or isolated, and this means that the populations are also small and isolated 3/

PLAUSIBLE WORST CASE SCENARIO

1/12
#PlausibleWorstCaseScenario #ClimateCrisis
2022
2019, 2020 and 2021 were ominous – but they barely touched the surface.
Expect more heatwaves, storms, floods, droughts. Watch as the Arctic and Antarctic continue to melt.

Coral Reef death escalates.

2/12
#PlausibleWorstCaseScenario #ClimateCrisis
2032
Ice caps and glaciers lose cohesion. Water sources evaporate. Heatwaves, droughts and soil loss ratchet up.
Climate famines hit Africa, South Asia, South and Central America. Water is now the primary cause of war.

Exactly! Humans are now responsible for these extinctions as the planets Apex Predator!
Humans are responsible for most mammalian extinctions for the past 125,000 years. That's an insane amount of time!
The rate at which mammals are going extinct is also going up as we humans continue to change the climate. Polar bears for example, losing their habitat due to the melting ice caps, which we have been causing since the industrial revolution. Also rainforest are being cut down.

Observed Impacts from Climate Change:

" The rise in weather and climate extremes has led to some irreversible impacts as natural and human systems are pushed beyond their ability to adapt"

1/ Well, tx for the waiting but we had to double check out #scientific findings cause:
It turns out #history of the #extinction of the #dinosaurs has to be rewritten! We found prove that Dinos survived at least until 11/2/2022 !!!

But let's start from the beginning.
puhh, I wanted to start from the beginning and than an surprising attack of vomiting struck me down. I suspect angry competitors poisening me. Anyway, as I said, we found dinos. Apparently they are not that special here. At first this one(1). It was sleeping or mummified,...
... sure yet. we went on (1) till Dolavon, they turn left looking for promising land. till (2). First we found some dino footprints(3). they were pretty fresh for animals supposedly extinct ten of millions of years ago! we knew we were on something big there!...

Here’s the core of it. The question no one will face when they are prattling on about protests. “Do you know what a 2 degree temperature rise looks like and what it means for your children?”

He has no idea, and isn’t interested. The problem in a nutshell.
It’s such a problem this. People really have no idea of what is coming with the #ClimateCrisis, and sort of numbly switch off to it. When it really explodes (it’s already started), they will all say there wasn’t enough warning and more should have been done. 🤦🏻‍♂️ #ClimateEmergency
Someone just told me they've been waiting for climate change since they were 15 (which I assume was about 40 years ago) and nothing's changed in that time. I block all climate science deniers instantly, there is no time to waste on that shit.

Today is #Halfearthday2021, a plan to protect 50% of the earth, to stop #biodiversity loss & prevent #climate change. Wow, a plan to #restore the planet: that's hopeful!? Unfortunately, not. There is good science showing this is the wrong direction... 🧵 (1/5) #COP26 #COP15
2/5. Every funder should know that if a Half Earth proposal lands on their desk, there will be social risks. Despite the cosy rhetoric, Fortress Conservation leads to #humanrights abuses. Protecting 50% of the globe could affect >1 billion ppl, per Schleicher et al., 2019
3/5. Ecologists, none the wiser, might consider this a price worth paying if species are protected from #extinction. It's a mistake made by Kim Stanley Robinson. The great myth is that people are bad for biodiversity, as shown by Ellis et al., 2021 👇

The Mammillaria tezontle cactus is a mossy cherry-size globe frizzed with feathery spines. It grows only on volcanic tezontle rock and is nearly extinct in the wild. But it can still be found in home plant collections. How does that work? More here: thewalrus.ca/the-cactus-tha… 1/5

For the return of the #UNMBioblog after our year hiatus, I chose to write about the negative consequences for cats, humans, and #wildlife when we allow #cats to roam freely. I couldn't help myself with the punny title.
unm-bioblog.blogspot.com/2021/09/catast…
I was inspired to write this blog after I witnessed my neighbor's outdoor pet #cat killed a #bird under my feeder. A heated argument ensued. I know nothing has changed because I still scare him out of my backyard. I've counted 9 different cats in my backyard, here is one
I am a paradoxical #catlover, which stems from my #science & #ornithology career. I know how cute it is for my own #cat to frolic in flowers but I understand how dangerous it is for #cats, human #health, & #wildlife when cats roam #CatsOfTwitter #Caturday #catsofinstagram

I’ve worked in sustainability for 23 years, talking to large companies & campaigners daily.

No one serious has questioned the scale of the problem for years on end now, but I’m still not convinced the absolute, critical urgency of it has landed. Even with some of the NGOs. 1/
We need to treat the #IPCCReport science as an explosive device that needs immediate disabling, instead of viewing it as a guide map from which we can deviate or against which we can adjust our speed. We simply can’t.
#ClimateCrisis #extinction #nature #wildlife #ClimateEmergency
Of course too many companies still put short term profit ahead of long term losses, which are inevitable if they don’t change, but someone else’s problem. But also too many turf wars between NGOs, which plays right into the wrong hands. We have to get better at this, immediately.
