now THIS is our kind of selfie stick. Black and white photo of an elderly male shepherd holding a lamb and a cane.
This was snapped in the 1970s by John Tarlton (collections number PH1/3/4/1/1-12). It's of a lovely Cotswold lamb held by a shepherd, Jack Bond. The better of the Bond brothers.

Firstly, you might be aware of this, but in our garden we have two chickens. They live in a little chicken house. Their names are Lines & Puffball. These was chosen by Friday Fledglings, our under 5s group, who we should entrust with more infrastructure decisions than we do.
We have a group that tends to the chickens — a complex machine of many moving parts, that keep the chickens chicking over.

It’s kind of therapeutic, like an SAD light.

Life gets busy. Emails overflow. The soul blocks, spluttering like an old pipe.

I'm finally set up to livetweet Day 13 of #HarvardTrial. Harvard's expert, the @UCBerkeley labor economist David Card, is on the stand, attempting to firm up his finding that there is no statistical evidence of discrimination against Asian-Americans.
Another economist, Susan @Dynarski, who has contributed to a brief in support of Harvard and looked closely at this case, has said that Card is the exact last expert she'd want to to go up against — see below:
Card is looking over a chart of some of @Fair_Admissions's models, in which Asian-Americans see measurably higher academic and extracurricular ratings in Harvard admissions officers, but lower personal ratings. He calls it a "strange kind of schizophrenia."

The #selfie stick: a military history thread.

Selfie sticks have, of course, been around as long as the wheel. But despite this, their use in the military can only be traced back to the 17th century.
Prince William of Orange bought the fad to England from Europe when he landed at Torbay in 1688. Not one to show off, William always avoided looking directly at his phone. Artist Jan Wyck has beautifully captured William's sideways glance as he struggles to line up the shot.
It was George Washington who started the fashion for looking directly at the camera when he captured the moment of his victory at Trenton in 1777. Enraged that his horse, Blueskin, refused to look at the phone, Washington later returned him to his original owner.
