New: The Senate Intelligence Committee just released its bipartisan report on the Obama administration’s response to Russian interference in the 2016 election. Find it here: intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/…
Lisa Monaco recalled a conversation with Mitch McConnell where he stated "you security people should be careful that you're not getting used," which she interpreted as the majority leader doubting the intelligence concluding Russia was trying to interfere.
The Senate report is notably inconclusive on whether the Obama administration's messages to senior Russian officials to knock it off had any effect at all. Notes that the Kremlin's operations continued after the "high-level warnings of potential retaliation."
Sen. @RonWyden has some additional views, says the Senate report "lacks critical information." The Democratic senator notably chastises Obama admin for withholding information from congressional intelligence committees and says Gang of Eight briefings had no formal recordkeeping
@RonWyden Wyden: Rpt "denies the American public an opportunity for historical accountability—for the refusal of some members to inform the public about Russian interference and for public statements denying the existence of intelligence indicating Russia was seeking to help Donald Trump."
@RonWyden Under the report's section for "post-election actions" taken in response to Russia's interference, an entire section is redacted.
@RonWyden Susan Rice said options considered but not executed were heavily slanted toward economic measures, but Treasury concluded previous sanctions on Russia had "exhausted economic options that would impact Russia in a meaningful way but would not harm the United States or its allies"
@RonWyden Wyden: "The immediate result of the Republican refusal to publicly acknowledge Russian interference was the watered down letter to the president of @NASEDorg" that "failed to prompt a response proportional to the seriousness of the threat"
@RonWyden @NASEDorg Wyden importantly notes the impact of Obama admin's decisions on breathless press coverage of WikiLeaks dumps: "At the least, stories about Democratic emails might have mentioned that their release was part of a Russian influence campaign"
