Thread - The failure of the 49 far-right* candidates in #Elections2020 despite their big spend is the failure to scapegoat migrants for the real issues people face. In the exit polls only 1% of voters fell for that racist scapegoating that lets FF FG capitalism off the hook /1
Partially using far-right sources (see image as example) where fascist friendly candidates are called 'patriots' & adding in some additional undeclared ones we identified 49 candidates incl 3 TDs who the fascists had high hopes for or who were running for far right groups. /2
These also appeared in printed form as with this leaflet. The group in this far right ecosystem ran
Renua 12
Irish Freedom Party 11
National Party 10
Anti Corruption Ireland 4ish*
12 Independents including 3 sitting TDs /3
This was one of the earliest versions of a ecosystem graphic from the far-right. Note this ones includes 2 of the TDs who amplify far right messaging, Grealish & Collins as well as Peter Casey. McGrath is the 3rd TD who appears above but they had him in wrong constituency! /4
Some of the online stuff was crude - this got RTed by Broadsheet despite obvious fascist descriptions of other parties. The far right have got an influence on at least some journalists including quite senior RTE ones, and this has been reflected in soft coverage of rallies /5
All of these candidates are about to do badly, losing votes in the case of the TDs, getting tiny votes for the rest. But the far-right did get a huge reach from the media in soft interviews that treated them like any other party /6
None of the 10 National Party candidates got more than 700 people to follow their candidate Facebook page, most much less. This despite paying for ads. So this media coverage in local press will have been of huge value to them in reaching the 1% who scapegoat migrant /7
At least until recently they really thought people would fall for that scapegoating, thought NP Reynolds would beat Sinn Fein in Longford for instance. Soft media treatment has allowed them to self delude that everyone shares their hate but is 'afraid to speak their mind' /8
We think the experience of canvassing has been a wake up call for some - hopefully those people will cop on, exit the movement and reconsider their politics of hate. The numbers in their canvassing photos plummeted despite die hards travelling across country to help /9
The spectrum of groups in this far right ecosystem stretches from the paranoid and delusional to the ideologically committed and motivated fascists who have attacked people on the streets. One NP candidate attacked people leafletting in his area on at least two occasions /10
During the election some these candidates have said they want to close all Mosques, deport all migrants and even execute doctors who provide abortion care and people who campaigned for Repeal. There were multiple arson attacks during 2019, including on a Sinn Feins TD car /11
The far right were not seeing this election as a moment of taking power & then waiting for the next one. It was a moment of recruitment & networking before returning to the streets with they hope greater numbers. Defeat will demoralise them but they won't all give up. /12
Will continue this thread as results come in to illustrate the scale of their failure to fool voters, in the meantime check out the sticky on our profile for much more context and give us a follow to get future updates. /13
You may note we included Renua but not Aontu in this far right listing. Both are similar in regard to anti-choice basis but while Renua appears on far right graphics Aontu don't because so far they have (mostly) refused other far right talking points & event participation /14
Here's one early indication, the National Party's Gunning in this WIcklow tally has 0 votes out of a total of about 180+ - BTW for regular followers she's mother of infamous F Gunning of the referendum period who pulled strange stunt with the fake Repeal t-shirt & placard /15
And another very positive indicator from a Dublin West tally where Peter Casey who got 17.3% here in the presidential is only on around 2% - he is 'far right adjacent' candidate who isn't already a TD with greatest chance of a big vote - they would have seen that as victory /16
This Dublin Bay South tally of 17 out of 106 boxes has Ben Scallan of the IFP on only 0.5% - if anything its starting to look like the far right candidates are going to do even worse than we supposed last night. Ben had the weird 'Pro Troops' slogan - US advisors? /17
Upthread you see how National Parties Reynolds in Longford-Westmeath was the big far right hope in the election. They thought he might beat SF. He's not on 2% in this tally, SF topping poll on 21% /18
Fingal Tally - GoD got lots of publicity but her vote has fallen from 4% in the by-election to 1.8% with 32% of boxes tallied. Her transfer in the by election looked like half her voters were unaware of how far right she had gone - local campaign to warn people worked here /19
One of the more bizarre far right candidates, the migrant who wants to stop migrants John Bowler is only on 0.5% for the IFP in Kerry /20
Dublin Central ended up with 3 far right candidates who managed to come at the bottom of the poll, on this 97% tally they have not even managed to get 1% of the vote between them. /21
Fascist Twitter is taking their complete humiliation at the hands of the Irish people rather badly /22
National Party failing to even reach 1% so far in Roscommon - Galway. This would have been presumed one of their stronger areas /23
Dun Laoghaire sees another of the high profile far right candidates, John Waters who is a household name and has recently been pushing the Great Replacement conspiracy. Not even on 1.5% on this 95% tally. IFP much worse at 0.2% /24
Carlow - Kilkenny where there were 3 of them & no Aontu to absorb the hardcore anti-choice but not open racist vote sees Renua do slightly better but still half 2016 vote. ACI & IFP votes are laughable /25
Limerick City has National Party Rebecca Barrett at the very bottom of the field on less than 1%
Probably the biggest far right adjacent hope for the fascists was Verona Murphy who got 28% in the by-election for FG. She has repeated some of their talking points. Tallies so far have her on 7%, 1./4 that byelection showing, 6th in this 5 seater
Because of his high presidential vote Peter Casey was the other big far right adjacent hope but without the media falling for his stunts and giving him a platform he has done very badly, only 1% in Dublin west 100% tally, he had 17.4% last time
From what we are hearing a fair number of far-right candidates and their teams have vanished from count centers, off home to throw a tantrum. Some are doing it online and yes we love to see it.
While enjoying their crushing electoral defeat lets remember the far right is also about violent street politics and a number of anti-fascists have been prosecuted for engaging in community self defense - a legal fund for them has been launched firefund.net/afalegaldefens…
If you've been unaware of the reorganisation of the far right in the aftermath of the anti-choice hard right being defeated in the Repeal referendum this thread will catch you up
It's taken from our mammoth thread of threads on the far right in Ireland
Far right adjacent Mattie McGrath has lost over 4% of his vote in Tipperary, he posted a photo with the IFP candidate prior to election, she only got 1%
Galway East result, two far right candidates at bottom of poll with 372 votes combined eliminated on first count - be interesting to see where their transfers going
Dublin Bay South count sees Renua only get 634 votes & IFP Ben ‘conservative comeback’ Scallan a minuscule 245 votes - the pro-troops slogan must have fell on deaf ears
Peter Casey went out on the 1st count in Dublin West on less than 10% of the vote he got in the same area in the presidential election. John Waters out on the 1st count in Dun Laoghaire
Wexford count sees far right adjacent Verona Murphy getting 1/4 of the percentage she had in the byelection - 5825 votes
Mayo eliminated IFP on 246 votes. 64,000 votes there so that’s err 0.4%
Laos - Offaly 1st count both far right candidates go out on first count with 741 votes between them
Far right continue to take their humiliation completely in their stride
Dublin Bay North sees far right Ben Gilroy only get 771 votes - about 1/4 of the vote he received before he openly teamed up with the far right
Martin Kenny tops the poll and is elected in Sligo - the far right burned car outside his home after he spoke up against them
Just in case any internationals have made it this far and now imagine Ireland as some sort of Utopia this gobshite will also get in
Casey ends up with less that 2% in Donegal, his vote was over 15 times higher in the presidential election. And Niall gets wiped out on less than 1%
On the negative side two of the far right adjacent TDs who are on the fascist ‘who to vote for’ graphics at the top of the thread increased their vote, one ( Collins) considerably. Fascism might have been unattractive but racist dog whistles were not vote losers in those cases
So while results are a massive set back for the projects to build fascist parties the underlying racism they hoped to use to do so remains. They will now seek other ways to mobilize this, probably through a return to attacking asylum seeker accommodation
They have had big setbacks on 3-4 fronts since December, being outnumbered D14, outaggroed F1, outvoted F8 & out localed in Balbriggan. That demoralises them & brings to the fore rivalries & arguments. And we love to see it.
Worth noting - some far right candidates were straight up with their politics, other posed as anti-establishment but with dog whistles for those in the know. This tricked voters as in Carlow-Kilkenny were when 3 FR were eliminated on 3rd count 20% transfers went PbP left
In Clare there were two far right candidates, when the Renua one was eliminated on 1st round only 1/3 of transfers went to IFP & 8% even went to PbP. So actual far right voters reflected in that 1/3rd of .3% - hard to do this calculation in every case but lets see /49
In Cork East 2 far right candidates again with 0.8% each on 1st count get eliminated on 4th and 12% transfers for Green & 17% to Labour /50
Peter Casey did even worse in Donegal where his vote fell from 32.8% to 1.48% - again underlining the role the mainstream media played in amplifying racist anti-Traveller remarks in presidential election and thus giving him oxygen of publicity. Stunts not covered this time /51
Donegal also saw the far right grifter Niall McConnell who is always pleading for yet more donations only getting 0.75% despite buying ads & printing 20,000 'newspapers' /52
Dublin Bay North had two candidates from those far-right lists above but when the first who got .28% was eliminated almost none went to Ben Gilroy whose vote had fallen from 6.5% to 1.1% /53
Dublin Central had 3 far right candidate who only managed 0.8% between them. 20% of their transfers went left, about 24% to anti-choice Aontu, a much more logical destination. With these tiny votes much of them may be neighbor / family rater than ideological /54
Even with GoD whose politics were so exposed her vote halved to 1.9% her transfers still went 5% PbP, 5% Soc Dem. 12% I4C, 7% GP, 5% Labour. So 34% of the most exposed far right candidates transfers went leftish. A really not paying attention anti-establishment vote? /55
In Dublin NW 25% of National Party Redmond transfers went to PbP, 10% GP, 20% SD. He only had 0.8% in 1st count so its possible these were the SF votes transferred to him on C2 then passing on down /56
RENUA who have failed to get the 2% needed to continue to get the large state subsidy that kept them on life support is now having a tantrum directed at their party founder who was part of the reason they got that handout in the first place /57
Galway East saw 1/3 of the odious Dara O'Flaherty's tiny 0.5% go to far-right adjacent TD Noel Grealish who actually increased his vote from 11 to 13% - Grealish was involved in a blatant attempt to whip up racist fear against Nigerians who sent money home to families /58
Of those far right candidates who ran in a party (incl two 'secret' ACI ones) this is the total votes by party and than the average vote per candidate. These would be in the region of 0.5% of the vote in each area, i.e. only 1 person in 200 fell for their hate /60
