One in bling-bling, noisily bragged he has no business in America if Nigeria isnt a mess. We could hear interviewer asking in frustration, if he understands English Language, having told him many times to place his right index finger on an IR scanner and he was getting it wrong.
An average Nigerian Intending-immigrant is very gullible. A guy we call "Scoror" at Oluwole, Lagos Island, before d initial demolition is responsible for more than half of our illegal immigrants in SA. He has never left Nigeria before, but educated people are paying him for Visa.
Note the quotation mark. "Pastors" aren't entire left out of the grand scheme to hoodwink those that are desperate, and it has always been like this. A drama I saw many years ago, when US embassy still allowed food canteen shed, opposite it at Walter Carrington, comes to mind.
I did a bit of cab work after Uni. I took a client, who has interview and had to wait in the shed opposite the US embassy, where people wait as early as 4am before the embassy opens. Typically, people are called in in batches based on appointment time. The 9AM batch were first.
Just before 9AM, A man with a huge bible started preaching "Divine Favour." He then claimed God showed him that US embassy will only give one person visa out of the entire 9AM batch, that whoever wants to be the person should put N500 in his/her passport and bring it forward.
To my greatest shock, hundreds of people rushed at him. The intriguing part is, the guy said, "9AM batch," but people slated for 10AM, up till 12AM dropped their passports and N500 for prayers. Isn't it sufficient a disincentive that he said only one person will get the Visa? 😀
When they were all gone for their interview, I watched our man from where sun, thirst & hunger was killing me, count all the money, bought rice with 2 eggs soaked in ofada sauce, and Orobo Pepsi. He was long gone when people started coming out & were asking after his whereabouts.
At that time, US Embassy tells u right away if u are denied, with a paper saying "you don't have strong ties." The person I went with was last batch. I saw nearly all the batches come out cursing. Its not impossible that the Embassy was watching the prayer for Visa drama on CCTV.
