Recently this tweet has gotten a lot of attention, suggesting a massive jump in methane concentrations in Barrow, Alaska. We need to be cautious about over-interpreting data from single station that may be effected by local conditions not representative of the larger Arctic. 1/7
NOAA provides a network of greenhouse gas monitoring sites around the world. These include a number of different locations throughout the Arctic: esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/dv/iadv/ 2/7
If we look at other locations, say Alert in Nunavet, Canada, we see the well-known upward trend in methane over the past decade but no sign of a recent spike. 3/7
Similarly, concentrations at Summit camp in Greenland are still rising but do not show anything unusual this year: 4/7
Concentrations in Svalbard, Norway show an uptick in 2019 but not as dramatic as seen in the Barrow dataset: 5/7
Methane is a reasonably well mixed greenhouse effect, and its influence on climate depends on its overall atmospheric concentration rather than readings at a particular station. NOAA's global timeseries lags behind a few months, but I'd advise waiting to see what it shows: 6/7
Its quite important to reduce global methane emissions! However, current estimates from the @gcarbonproject suggest that agriculture and fossil fuels – mostly in Asia and Africa – are driving the recent rise in atmospheric concentrations: 7/7
(That should have been "reasonable well mixed greenhouse gas"!)
