I've been tweeting a lot about PM Johnson; and have now turned those tweets into a blog for @lsebrexitvote (thanks to @rosamundmtaylor). These are dangerous times. 1/

I argue that Johnson is driven by power, and that his impulse is to reject scrutiny and constraint. He is reckless as to the economic consequences of his actions. 2/
Those who oppose the drift towards authoritarianism need to find ways to change the narrative and to change people's minds. 3/

Thanks for all the comments on this yesterday; really interesting. Let me try to shift the agenda to the question raised in the last para - what should the opposition do in the face of the drift towards authoritarianism? 1/
First, who or what is 'the opposition'? And second, what should the message be? I tend to get stuck... on the one hand, the opposition needs to be very broad (and has to reach out to those who voted for Brexit and/or Johnson). 2/
But the broader the church, the harder it tends to be to agree on a message, or a leader, or a strategy. 3/3

It's Friday night. Someone appears to have inserted what seem to be notes for a speech into my unexpurgated copy of the Treaty of Lisbon (which I've borrowed from @stevepeers). It's quite something... 1/
There's a section titled 'you need us more than we need you', with all manner of stats on the relative size of the EU and UK markets... 2/
Then there's a bit on migration from the UK; proposals for the imposition of stringent language requirements, and a test on institutional structure of the EU... 3/

Right. Trade, independent nations, sovereignty and the UK's future relationship with the EU. A simple thread. 1/
Independent nations begin life without ready-made trade deals. They tend to want to sign trade deals in order, within the confines of WTO rules, to make trade easier with one another, and to promote economic growth. 2/
Make trade easier how? By removing or reducing customs and tariffs, and by agreeing to the equivalence of each others' standards. The agreements are complex - dealing with charges, standards, enforcement, etc. 3/

We can rail about respecting the vote, the EU being stubborn,May being incompetent etc all day long. The fact is it cannot be negotiated successfully, and anyone who believes otherwise is mistaken

2) reasons are very simple, and always have been. The deal that was promised & any feasible deal are so far apart as to be unrecognisable

Either Brexit will be so painful that it will destroy the party who implements or so meaningless that it would be embarrassing to implement
3) half the country do not want Brexit, the other half (apart from the hardcore) voted for the pain free, cake & eat it easy brexit that was promised.

There is *no* feasible Brexit that would gain a majority in the UK & non possible within the EU & UKs red lines

1) “950,000 job losses” is predicated on leaving the EU so not yet. Certainly no large scale losses have occurred

2) Since Brexit real weekly earnings have fallen by 0.5% ons.gov.uk/generator?uri=… mostly due to inflation. That’s £25 so far.
