Just finished @J_Lovering's excellent Weeds podcast with @mattyglesias. A great balanced look at the challenges facing current-gen nuclear reactors (particularly in Western countries) and the potential of next-gen ones: vox.com/2020/2/28/2115… 1/3
Nuclear is an important part of our portfolio of decarbonization technologies. It provides energy-dense firm generation and heat that is otherwise hard to decarbonize, and can help balance out future higher renewable energy generation mixes. 2/3
It is not a silver bullet, and we should not delude ourselves that it will drive the bulk of decarbonization, at least for the next decade or two. But at the same time we should strive to keep existing reactors open and work to develop future cost-effective solutions. 3/3
