Now, 2 tonnes carried by ship for 5,000 kilometres (a bit less than the distance between the UK and the US) results in the emission of 150 kg of CO2, compared to 6,605 kg of CO2 for 2 tonnes carried by plane. Air cargo is 44x more polluting than sea cargo.

So even *if* we had enough planes (we don't, not by a very very long straw) to replace a meaningful amount of sea freight with the US by air freight, we'd be setting a blowtorch to the planet.
