As @DmitryOpines points out in response, the strategy of not asking for things the UK would like (eg participation in EASA/Erasmus/Safety and Security area) just because it doesn’t want the EU to ask for something in return is (to use the technical term) barking.
Rational negotiators ask for what they want, but make it clear they won’t pay (much of) a price for them.
The suspicion is that this isn’t a rational negotiating strategy but simply that anything that involves any cooperation with the EU beyond Canada is ruled out, for pure ideological reasons.
To put it mildly, that was not an approach heralded by the Vote Leave campaign. It also involves a rather obvious failure to look at a map (or at the depth of our trade/social/security links with our immediate neighbours).
Nor was it heralded in the October 2019 Political Declaration laid before the voters as the “oven ready” deal we’d be leaving on. No mandate for it whatsoever.
