So, if we pull those numbers together. At the very least, if 40 percent of people in the US 80 years of age and above contract the virus. That is 5 million people. If 70 percent, that is 9 million who might contract the virus.

If 5 to 9 million people ≥ 80 contract virus, with a fatality rate of nearly 22%, that's between 1 to 2 million deaths. This seems unbelievable. Let's lower that rate to even 10 percent and it's still nearly 1 million. One percent and it's about 100,000. This is serious.

🦠 Big news. Amherst College is closing down. Remote learning will begin after spring break. Kids must be out by Monday. They’ve been told to pack up as if they’re going home for the summer. #COVID2019
The faculty and staff will remain on campus. Students are being sent away by Monday. It’s not clear if they will come back this term or not.

The kid already made hamantaschen. Being part of this Jewish cooking tradition is making me remember my maternal grandmother, Edith Goodman. When I was young she lived in an apartment building in Southfield Michigan with my Grandpa Sam.

Edith use to play cards with her two lady friends in that apartment building. Goldie Adler and Evelyn Plesko. The game was called “spite and malice”. She taught me when I slept over. They played for money. Saved it so they could all go out to dinner together.

Goldie was the widow of the rabbi who was shot by a “troubled youth” as my mom put it. She always had a jar of dill pickles at the ready in her apartment upstairs. Evelyn taught music at the synagogue. She wore lots of jewelry and smelled nice. Their memories are a blessing.

#China’s National Health Commission said at @WHO briefing in Beijing this week no one is immune from #COVIDー19 since it is a new pathogen. Nationally, fatality rate is 3-4%. But China health officials earlier posted data on #coronavirus that might help when assessing your risk:
A team from #China’s CDC published research in a Chinese journal of epidemiology. The data, based on 70k patients, is till Feb 11 (so a little old) but it reveals trends. Fatality rate for elderly at 8-15%..
Those with compromised immune systems at higher risk. For heart disease, death rate is 10.5%. Men are dying from #coronavirus at almost twice the rate as women. Link to study here: chinaepi.icdc.cn/zhlxbx/ch/read…

What's the fatality rate of #coronavirus ?

Inside Wuhan: 1 in 23 cases
Outside Wuhan, but inside Hubei: 1 in 71
Outside Hubei but inside China: 1 in 640
Outside the China mainland: 1 in 113

None reflect an accurate fatality rate - but they do reflect the known data.
Wuhan dropped to a third of total cases as of yesterday, but still has a whopping 73% of total deaths. I asked experts why.
One major factor is it's likely there are many more cases in Wuhan than are being reported, a crunch on resources means people with milder cases aren't getting tested and counted in the # s

More cases = bad, but it also points to a much lower fatality rate than what we see above
