Interesting that 7 NBA players out of about 120 tested so far have been positive for coronavirus. That’s 6%. Are they representative of nation or outliers? If representative of nation this would suggest there are 19 million coronavirus cases in the country.
This would also mean the coronavirus is far more common and far less deadly than presently thought. And that a certain amount of herd immunity exists in the country.
If NBA players are outliers this would also be fascinating. Why are they testing at so much higher rates than the general public?
Either way, it actually makes me want the entire league tested. That would be a sample size of 450 people. Granted it’s not a representative sample size of US, but it would potentially be helpful to see if the rate remained the same for the additional 330 players.
Honestly, expanding the testing to all pro athletes — NFL, NHL and MLB — to see if rate was consistent would be great because it would give us a much bigger sample size of “healthy” adults. So would randomized testing trials of American population.
It also makes sense why so many famous people are testing positive even though the number of cases so far is very small. Tom Hanks and his wife, Sean Payton, Idris Elba, this virus may just be incredibly common.
This would also explain why it burns out in a couple of months in most countries. Yes, the policies put in place to combat the spread help, but we are also creating huge herd immunity with the massive numbers of infections, a huge majority of which are asymptomatic.
