In viral times, it's hard to focus on other things.
But
There's a related story called the #coronabill that needs attention.
UKGov made decisions resulting in preventable deaths
And now they want more power and less oversight for more bad decisions
THIS MUST STOP
References for the deaths are at the end. But the sad thing is we are still making things worse.
Time is too short for disbelief. So sceptics read a few tweets from @richardhorton1 who humbly doesn't tell you he's editor of the Lancet - our world-leading medical journal
Welcome back.
The bill I'm referencing is below
The goals are honourable.
1.Increasing health Workforce
2.Easing staff burden
3.Slowing the virus
4.Helping with the deceased
5.Supporting you and me.
No one could complain about those.
gov.uk/government/pub…
The problem is with two unexplained sections
Both sound innocent. But the content is incendiary and without explanation from our Government
They hand enormous power to UKGov under it's own discretion for 2 years without challenge.
More than Churchill
I'll review each.
Easing the burden on frontline staff, both within the NHS and beyond
Sounds ok? It gives.
1.Arbitrary detention without trial
2.On the approval of a single UKGov Doctor
3.Indefinitely
4.Without appeal.
You should now be checking as I must be joking.
Except I'm not.
Scroll to "allow temporary judicial commissioners (JCs) to be appointed"
Allows UKGov to
1.Create a secret police
2.Armed with huge powers
3.Allow Priti Patel exclusively to say how long you can be locked up by them before seeing a judge.
4.From 3 to 12 days
Check!
The smaller needles in this honey pot.
Creates burial plans vastly larger that UKGov has indicated.
Maybe good - protects medical staff from negligence. But in the worst way for victims.
Retired NHS staff on front line, no tests, limited protection - in elderly staff!
What did Mr Churchill do with the equivalent in WW2.
1.Created a non partisan Gov to make sure powers were not abused.
2.Invited non political experts to his team.
3.Subjected himself to regular parliamentary review.
4.Increased oversight
5. An annual review process.
How does #coronabill and UKGov compare?
1❌ Partisan with decision makers who increased #Covid_19 exposure
2 ❌ Excluded
3 ❌ Removing scrutiny of bill
4 ❌Removing oversight including of the PM
5 ❌No review or appeal for 2 years.
❌ no explanation why this is needed
Whatever this #covidbill is, it bears no resemblance to Emergency Powers of Previous eras.
Similarly the "War Cabinet" is a misnomer compared to how we normally do this.
Is it right that a Government that has made such serious mistakes is given less oversight?
Clearly is this is NOT the right approach.
There is another character from World War 2 worth considering.
He used a shocked parliament
elected under dubious circumstances
to enable sweeping powers that removed him from scrutiny.
His bill was called #enablingact
A #UKCrisisGovNow we can trust, that has the talent who will make scientifically informed decisions with oversight.
Such as this.
Not a #gestapobill
War Powers
Until this Gov, Parliament had been pushing for more oversight of Goverment to prevent abuse of war power.
Remember the Iraq War? Many felt passionate about that.
This was the plan (attached) which UKGov cancelled in 2011
