The coronavirus outbreak is the most serious public health crisis we have faced in a generation - more than ever at times like this we need one another.

Across the country people are pulling together - here are stories giving me hope and some ways to help: [THREAD]

People are rightly anxious about the impact it will have on their loved ones and on their day-to-day lives. [THREAD]
It is more important than ever that the Government is providing clear communication to the public about the steps it is taking to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.
I am deeply concerned that over the past 48hrs ministers have been failing in their responsibilities to provide consistent and transparent public health advice.

There are three parts to today’s budget statement:

* The Corona emergency
* The underlying emergency in our economy after a decade of austerity
* The government’s failure to tackle injustice

1. On Corona – Measures to support businesses are welcome. But there are millions of workers on low wages and in insecure work that needed greater support. Decent sick pay must be extended to all and we need to do far more to protect our strained social care system.
2. The real message of this budget is that austerity was an unnecessary and failed experiment. We have a low growth economy, flat-lining productivity, low pay & hollowed out public services. This budget is a confession that austerity was always a political choice, & a poor one.

Sir Philip Rutnam has made very serious allegations about the conduct of the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

It is unprecedented that a senior civil servant has raised concerns like this in such a public way. 1/5
Effective government demands that all those who dedicate themselves to public service can do so in an environment free of bullying and harassment.

There are now urgent questions that must be answered and steps that need to be taken. 2/5
First, the Cabinet Secretary should launch an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sir Philip Rutnam’s departure.

Second, the Home Secretary has a duty to come to Parliament on Monday to explain the allegations made about her own conduct. 3/5

2/ Prisons and jails have banned visits amidst the public health crisis. While it may make sense, these visits are a lifeline for families and their incarcerated loved ones. If families can't see their loved ones, they must be able to hear them regularly.

(1/5) The number of confirmed #coronavirus cases in the U.S. has tripled in four days (938 on March 11 to over 3,000 today). In a crisis, Congress has one function — to stay on duty in DC and pass emergency legislation the country needs.
(2/5) National leadership should be focused on making sure as many Americans as possible can stay at home as much as possible, per public health experts’ recommendations. The only way to limit this disease is to ENABLE people to stay home. The time to act is now.
(3/5) The House passed the #coronavirus aid package late Friday night. If Mitch McConnell had not taken a long weekend, this could have been signed into law by now. Because of @senatemajldr lack of concern, the Senate will not consider the aid package likely until Tuesday.

Taiwan's number of COVID-19 infections is currently below 50, despite the island's proximity to the outbreak's epicenter on mainland China. Experts say early intervention has helped stop a public health crisis.
2. More than 2 months after a new virulent coronavirus emerged from the Chinese city of Wuhan, more than 100,000 people in dozens of countries have been infected.

The COVID-19 infection, however, has largely spared Taiwan, despite the island's proximity to the virus's epicenter.
3. When the outbreak first started in January, some experts predicted that Taiwan would have the highest number of cases outside of mainland China. However, while mainland China has had over 80,000 COVID-19 cases to date, Taiwan has kept its number of confirmed cases below 50.
