Jonathan Howe & Amy Whitefield offer some historic perspective on cancellation of #SBC2020. @baptistpress @Jonathan_Howe @acwhit facebook.com/BaptistPress/v…

A few inaccuracies make their analysis less helpful & seem more simplistic than the situation actually is, however. 1/4
1st #SBC not *cancelled* in 1945 b/c no provision allowed them to. Rather they spoke of SBC as *deferred* They actually looked to have it if possible. They amended Constitution in 1946 to accommodate *cancelling* annual meeting apparently in response to wartime dilemma. 2/4
2nd while P. Neff remained #SBC president in 1945, there existed no officer *term limits* in 1945. Term limits for president did not come until 1952 when Constitution was amended to limit president to 2 yrs. 3/4
Hence suggesting officers now (e.g. @jdgreear) remaining president *just like* in 1945 does not follow. Had the SBC met in 1945, Neff could have been elected again as president. In #SBC2020 JD Greear could not. 4/4
