Oh yeah #Masks4All
Working on a couple prototypes including a stapled one for people who don’t have access to sewing materials. (wash that one in a lingerie bag though)
Used a sewing machine but could easily be hand sewn. Just sewed a piece of wire from chinese takeout container cut to 3 inches, ends bend over and wrapped with electrical tape at the center of the fold for nose. Then folded up inside and sewed two sides to make pocket for filter.
It bends over the nose and the long bandana end can be tucked in the collar. No elastic needed. Just tie in back. Not perfect. But easy with pitiful sewing skills and few materials.
I only have thick electrical tape so I cut it lengthwise for better wrapping. Might decide a little shorter is better.
Wrapped wire. A loose wrap is better, makes for a flatter more comfortable nosepiece.
Fold in half and sew wire in tiny pocket in top
Once that is sewn in, fold up bandana corner, then fold up again.
Then just sew these two lines where the ruler is. Filter pocket and more layers over the face #FTW
Over fold the wire to fit to your face rather than trying to bend it totally on your face (ouch)
Now for non-sewers #woot
Just make sure the staple points are folded over tight and on the outside of the mask. As few staples as possible, wash in a lingerie bag and reassess staple integrity with every use.
Now trying pipe cleaner (ends bent over) ht @tdgor
I think a double wrapped twisted pipe cleaner might be better.
You could also skip the nose piece and use a bit of duct tape for the pocket for the filter.
Here is one with no nose piece, no sewing. Plastic tape. I did cut the corner off the end so the filter wouldn’t slide off the center of the face.
Definitely does not have as reassuring a fit up top, but nothing’s perfect.
The 3M filters came in
Y’all one filter is a bedsheet of micron particulate filters for homemade masks, and it’s breathable.
Retrofitted the green bandana with a twisted pipe cleaner and added a filter (they are one way so turn the intake side facing out...mark the intake side before you rip it apart lol)
The pipe cleaner is more comfortable but isn’t as tight as the wire...filter stuffed in the pocket. Next prototype will be a pounded flat copper wire. Very breathable with a bit of that reassuring stuffiness one gets in a real N95.
This will *not* give the same protection as a fit tested properly worn N95 don’t want to give that impression. But it has 5 layers of 100% cotton across the face and the micron filter. The bottom wraps well if you tie it up high. Tucking the bottom will keep from reaching under.
Masks are fomites too. Take the filter out and wash the mask on hot with detergent after each use and wash hands before and after handling them. I would think filters could be reused once a week or so...mark name too so people keep to their own and set them aside in quarantine.
Next prototype used a pounded flat copper wire, edges filed smooth. HT @radfugee. I didn’t bother wrapping it. Main thing is a 3 inch piece of wire became 4 inches, which is a little too long (have to mess with fit for a while). But so far this is my favorite for comfort and fit.
(4 layers doh)
