PC Engine Mini developer interview #4: former RED Company members Hiroshi Adachi & Keisuke Abe discuss the creation of PC Genjin (Bonk), as well as the spinoff PC Denjin (Air Zonk)🇯🇵
Bonk's design was based on a caricature Oji Hiroi drew of a friend from his college days—Hudson had requested a Mario-style action game from RED, and when Adachi saw this drawing he immediately came up with the name "PC Genjin" and was able to visualise a world & setting
(Oji Hiroi = creator of Tengai Makyou & Sakura Wars at RED, as well as Mashin Hero Wataru & Madou King Granzort, among many other things)

I don't have time to go over this whole interview but it seems a little deeper than the others, maybe only bc I'm less familiar with Bonk
that's Adachi on the left & Abe on the right, holding a picture of Bonk he drew to celebrate the PCE Mini

Abe was also one of the planners/artists on Legendary Axe, & I just read he also did Tempo for 32X—now that I think about it, the line from Bonk to Zonk to Tempo is obvious
