The thesis of the essay (also explored in my novel Walkaway) is that we might someday reimagine what we mean when we think of luxury: not being able to get everything when we want it, but rather great outpourings of materials and leisure tied into the rhythms of the world.

Maybe we'll all be summoned to work when renewable energy is available ("make hay while the sun shines") but we'll also be furloughed with all the food, friends and fun we want when it's not (and someone else will be called to work).

Despite the title, its really about about NOT getting cheated: anatomical dissections of scams that show you how they work. One thing that stuck with me from all that is how to spot a dirty "proposition" bet, a variable-odds bet on a specific outcome from a range of outcomes.

Lovell's rule of thumb is the more complicated a bet is, the scammier it is. If it pays 2:1 for one outcome, 5:1 for another, and 100:1 for a third, it's probably a scam. Complexity confounds your ability to match odds to payouts - to intuit whether it's a good bet.

You entrust digital products with a lot: from your thermostat to your car's informatics to your pacemaker to your email and financial data, defects in computers can expose you to potentially enormous risk.

The only thing worse than using a defective product is UNKNOWINGLY using a defective product (having faulty brakes is bad, discovering your brakes are faulty on the highway is much, much worse).

Tech companies have long asserted that they alone have the right to decide who can disclose true facts about defects in their products...for safety. If randos who discover their mistakes make disclosures without warning companies, then "bad guys" will exploit the bugs.

#Thread As part of public sector transformation, today we signed consultancy engagements with E & Y for a review of the public sector compensation. This will include development of pay-for-performance compensation, a concept that has been agreed to by Permanent Secretaries.
The review will also seek to establish an internally consistent and internally equitable compensation system based on a unified job evaluation tool. It will seek to simplify, streamline public sector compensation and make it more transparent.
This is a huge task that we could not undertake without the time and space permitted by the 4 year agreement with public sector unions.

2/ The weirdness began when I started seeing these strange videos promoting Saudi companies, mostly interviews with white men called 'Carl' and 'Rick' who had worked in Saudi for years, and generally found it amazing... #JamalKhashoggi
3/ Also let's not forget Noel, who presumably had no idea his interview about his experience in Saudi would be spammed around along with the name of a murdered Saudi journalist. That's some dark shit...Of course there's more.

#THREAD: Under my administration, Jamaica now has one of the most advanced and robust anti-corruption framework certainly in this region. My administration passed the legislation to establish the Integrity Commission and MOCA.
It is still in its early stages and not perfected.
One element of the framework introduced by me is the publishing of the summary financial position of the Parliamentary leaders of the country. The first publishing acts as the benchmark against which future declarations can be judged.
This ensures that the country can first have knowledge of the financial position of their leaders through transparent disclosure and then overtime judge the movement of their leaders financial position. This will build confidence in those elected to administer public affairs.
