Thread: 16 June 2022: Day 113 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Every bloody time. This one with the Harpoons is among the worst since the breaking of #Russia's naval blockade is an immediate problem for us all, not just #Ukraine. Really not sure we have the time for this roundabout method.
Delays getting the Switchblade 600 to #Ukraine since they are still in development. The Ukrainians have had trouble integrating the earlier models that have been shipped, finding smaller, cheaper drones more user-friendly.
#Turkey setting up to host a four-way meeting with the United Nations, #Russia, and #Ukraine over the grain exports, which Russia is currently blockading. Moscow is claiming it has not laid the mines at the ports and is not responsible for removing them reuters.com/world/middle-e…
#US publicly confirms that its assessments are that #Ukraine is correct, 100 Ukrainian soldiers are being killed per day by #Russia and at least that number injured.
#China's ruler Xi Jinping has set aside all ambiguity and said he supports #Russia's war on #Ukraine as a matter of "sovereignty and security", saying Peking will work for "closer strategic cooperation" with Moscow. politico.eu/article/china-…
#Israel has tilted rather sharply in #Russia's favour over #Ukraine, on the premise that the Russians "allow" the Israelis to deal with #Iran in #Syria. And yet the Russians still summon the Israeli ambassador when Israel actually takes action. timesofisrael.com/russia-summons…
Interesting. The #US gives an itemised list, saying the Alliance has sent more than #Ukraine has requested in every weapons category from tanks to air defence systems and missiles.
Extremely brave of Igor Denisov, the former captain of #Russia's national football team, to speak out like this against Putin's war on #Ukraine. "These events are catastrophic. It's horrific. I am not sure if I will be jailed or killed for this". theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/j…
A Russian in #Germany, Valid D., arrested in January 2021, has gone on trial for plotting to murder a Chechen dissident, Mokhmad Abdurakhmanov. "D." is accused of being an agent of #Chechnya's warlord-president, Ramzan Kadyrov, and selecting the hitman. themoscowtimes.com/2022/06/15/rus…
#Ukrainians understandably taking a dim view of the Roman Catholic Pope's moral confusion over #Russia's war against them.
Igor Girkin, once #Russia's man in #Ukraine, ends his self-imposed moratorium on criticising #Putin personally because things are going to badly for the Russians. Says the ruler is surrounded by awful people and without changes Russia will collapse.
Has anyone seen an announcement of this? The Russians have been making inroads around Kharkiv for a couple of days, so it seems plausible, but haven't seen anything "official".
Wonder if this shift in tone and message from #France has anything to do with President Macron currently being in Kiev to meet with #Ukraine's President Zelensky
Has been obvious for some time that #Germany and #France in particular regard #Ukraine's President Zelensky and his refusal to surrender to the #Russian army as a far larger problem than Putin and the attempt to extinguish a European state
.@USTreasury sanctioned Stanislav Shevchuk (based in Europe) and Alexander Zhuchkovsky (in Russia), two operatives of the far-Right Russian Imperial Movement, an instrument of the #Putin state, who were raising money for extremist units attacking #Ukraine. home.treasury.gov/news/press-rel…

President Zelensky says #Ukraine is "ready to work to become a full #EU member", after France, Germany, Italy, and Romania - all of whose leaders were in Kiev today - back "immediate" EU candidate status for Ukraine.
Better message from #France's President Macron, while visiting Irpin, which was devastated by the #Russians: "We are here to show our respect. Ukraine must resist and prevail. We are unambiguously on Ukraine’s side." Let's see if it's put into practice.
Pictures of #Ukraine's President Zelensky meeting with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, and Romania today in Kiev.
After the #US Secretaries of Defense and State visited Kiev in April and said they supported #Ukraine winning the war, #Biden demanded they tone it down. Now the administration is arguing over pressuring Zelensky to accept #Russia keeping territory. nbcnews.com/politics/natio…
#Ukraine's President Zelensky looks ... confused by, and a bit contemptuous of, what #France's President Macron is doing.
Now #France's President Macron is saying #Russia is "directly" responsible for the global food crisis and is demanding Moscow lift its naval blockade of #Ukraine.
Bit more difficult to tell #Ukraine's President to leave parts of his country under #Russian occupation when you have to do it while looking at what that actually means.
Maj.-Gen. Dmytro Marchenko, #Ukraine's commander on the Mykolaiv front, told the Krym.Realii website that Kiev considers the 750-foot Kerch bridge that links #Crimea to mainland #Russia to be a legitimate target. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/202…
#Britain: Ahmiri Azizi, 24, an asylum seeker from Iran living in Sheffield, a supporter of #IS, has been charged with seven counts of sharing terrorist material from June-November 2021, inc. one after the Liverpool women's hospital attack in Nov. 2021. examinerlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-…
A co-defendant alongside Azizi is Mohammed Hussini, also an #IS supporter, who has also been charged with four counts of disseminating terrorist material on Telegram between August and November 2021.
Interestingly, "Azizi's defence is that his phone was hacked by or on behalf of the Iranian government. John Jones QC, defending, said that Azizi supports Kurdistan becoming an independent nation and was an opponent to Iran and IS."
- #Russia has renewed its offensive around Izyum to try to encircle Severodonetsk
- Russian declared "humanitarian corridors" are likely to "manipulate the battlespace" as seen in Syria, and civilians trapped in Severodonetsk see them this way.
Interesting thread. The public messaging of #Russia and #China has become more overtly hostile to the #US-led world order; no reason to think the leaderships are not being honest about their views. Notable both see the collapse of the USSR as key.
Thread: 17 June 2022: Day 114 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Australia's new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he is considering accepting the invitation of #Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to visit Kiev during his upcoming European trip to the #NATO meeting in Spain on 29 June. apnews.com/article/russia…
#France's President Macron generally shifted his rhetoric over #Ukraine during his visit to Kiev with President Zelensky, but at the end shifts right back to where he was.
- #Russia is struggling to advance into the south of Severodonetsk city, despite concentrating artillery and air power on it
- Russia has resorted to unguided missiles because it is running short of precision weapons. #Ukraine's air defences holding.
#Russia is firing up to 50,000 artillery rounds per day and doing better at combined arms warfare. #Ukraine is running very low on ammunition for its Soviet-era weapons systems and Western weapons supplies are too slow and meagre to cover the gap. washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/…
Review of Antony Beevor's new book about the Russian Civil War, says he leaves ideology out as a factor in explaining the cruelty of the war. It's the myth that will never die though to say the the "Whites' ideology" was "ferociously ... antisemitic". newstatesman.com/culture/books/…
There were nominal "White" units, especially in Ukraine, who carried out terrible pogroms in 1919. They did so in defiance of the "White" high command, which repeatedly condemned such behaviour and ordered the protection of Jews.
The problem for the "Whites" on this, as on so much else, was that it was not a unified army in a conventional sense, but a loose movement bound by anti-Bolshevism.
