Legacy.
The legacy of films, the impact they have on generations, the way they shape our moment and the way they influence our future.
So yes.
Today, we're talking about Star Wars.
A lot of people talk about Star Wars.
Obviously, because a lot of people love Star Wars.
There are probably more people who love Star Wars than there are people who love Jesus
But unlike a lot of other movies, people who talk about Star Wars almost inevitably talk about how Star Wars was made.
The stories behind the scenes of Star Wars are almost as fascinating as the stories the films tell.

Star Wars is by far the most depressing big budget movie franchise. On a long enough time scale, evil always wins and everyone lives terrible lives before dying tragic deaths.
The Last Jedi gets refered to as the “dark” Star Wars, but it’s the world building in The Force Awakens that I find almost unbearably bleak.
The Rebellion failed so badly that The Empire 2.0 was able to return even stronger than before. Plus Han and Leia’s relationship was permanently destroyed after they raised an evil, murderous son who then goes on to kill Han. And people describe THAT as the “fun” Star Wars.

Okay, new thread: We're going into A New Hope, which I haven't seen in so long that I will hilariously remember almost none of it. It's a DVD/blu-ray set I picked up on a whim for like $30, because you can't NOT afford the OT at that point. #sithmas
This movie is one year older than me, so to me it's just STAR WARS. I resisted "A New Hope" for a long time because iT'S STAR WARS DAMMIT. I assume this is the revised New Coke edition. Nice bright/crisp picture so far. #sithmas
Here is something else I wanted to see: going from the cinematography and visual effects of 2006 and 2016 to, uh, 1977. Maybe it's easier to go from "gritty" Rogue One than it is from shiny Revenge of the Sith. #sithmas

Oh, my friends. 99% of the time, I can smile politely when strangers want to chat about Star Wars. I do not engage. I do not let on my deep roots or my current involvement. But tonight, when a cashier tried to geeksplain me, I LET THE NEXU CAT CLAWS OUT.
I was buying a BB-8 lanyard-- for the Disney cruise I'll be on as a guest speaker for Star Wars Day at Sea next week-- and the cashier said, "This is not the droid you're looking for." And I said, "I assure you that it is." And he said, "Well, do you know what that's from?"
So I said, "A New Hope."
And he said, "No. Star Wars."

It's long been my contention that the old Star Wars Expanded Universe was seen by many fans as a way to "fix" the perceived problems of the movies as they aged out of impressionable childhood and into nitpicky adolescence. Reactions to #TheLastJedi have cemented that impression.
The original trilogy was "cool" a lot of the time, but it was also goofy, cutesy, jokey, silly, kiddie—a lot of things that it's hard for a 14-year-old to admit to liking. The EU leaned heavily on the cool—bounty hunters, dark side Force users, brooding—and dropped the goofy.
The EU, and to some degree the prequels, affected the way hardcore Star Wars fans received the movies, allowing them to continue liking Star Wars while growing beyond the pulpy, goofy, fairy-tale parts of the movies. The EU either retconned them outright or let fans elide them.
