This is how I woke up
The swearing came first
Followed by a few text messages and scrolling of Twitter
I brushed my teeth
Next came my outfit
Which, of course, included shorts and slippers
Because, you know, this is how I wanted to meet my possible demise
When a @CivilBeat fellow called to ask me what to do, I told her to find shelter, preferably in a basement
When I called back to tell her of the false alarm she said she was in the bottom of the parking garage at our office building
She had a bag full of groceries ... And beer
I have to say, I was impressed. (Nice work @natanya_hnl)
But then it was time to write. Death would have to wait: civilbeat.org/2018/01/false-…
It's clear that people here are not happy civilbeat.org/2018/01/saturd…
But the false alarm also appears to have shown our vulnerabilities. Most people I talked to so far had no idea how to react
I saw college kids streaming out of their dorm rooms in pajamas. A few kids were running up the street carrying sweatshirts and a duffle bag
A @CivilBeat editor, meanwhile, was filling up his bathtub with water
In other news, it’s a beautiful day on the islands
Which made the thought of us perishing all the more tragic
Here are some facts in light of today's ballistic missile scare:
- The warning time for an attack is 12-15 minutes
- There are no designated shelters in Hawaii
- Not everyone will die
- The survival rate is expected to be up to 90%
And, yet, there was still that time Hawaii lawmakers wanted to hold a secret meeting about all this (via @courtneynteague)
There are reports — unverified at this time — of at least one man hiding in a lava tube on the Big Island (And, yes, we're looking into it)
Hawaii Gov. David Ige holding a press conference now to explain today’s missile flub. We have @marcelhonore on the scene
State officials says this was a "wrong button" situation. There was no redundancy in the system. One person made a mistake. Thousands panicked
"It's a human error. There is a screen that says, 'Are you sure you want to do this?'"

And they pushed the "Yes" button anyway

That comes from Vern Miyagi, the administrator of @Hawaii_EMA
Not everyone got the cell phone alert. If you have an iPhone you might want to check your Notifications settings to make sure you have these turned on
And now local officials are turning their attention to damage control for the state's $15 billion tourism industry...
"Nothing I can do about it: One blinding flash, and everything's done." — That's what Scott Speldrick of Minnesota told @CivilBeat reporter @stewartyerton today while reacting to the false alarm of a nuclear missile attack
Seems to me they might want to move a little faster in light of yesterday's events
There's some information here on what Hawaii residents can do in the event of a REAL nuclear attack dod.hawaii.gov/hiema/files/20…
Although the clip art can be a bit much...
