1. I was a HS teacher for a short time (grant position). Why would I never want teachers w/ guns? Besides the obvious, teachers represent the country as a whole. Which means there are good & bad teachers. I've heard teachers call POC teens terrible words in the teacher's lounge.
2. I've seen POC students treated worse than white students for same offense. Plus, no matter the race, I've seen teachers get frustrated and throw things (not at students). Teachers are human. I've been around some of the most outstanding teachers ever, but there are bad too.
3. I loved my job, but it was the bad teachers which finally drove me away. As a state granted teacher, it was hard to change an entire environment when I was only one of a few who would speak up. I finally resigned.
4. The most awesome teachers would probably handle themselves well, but it would take only one bad teacher to change the world of what they perceive as "bad" students.
5. We all know it's a terrible idea anyway, for many reasons, and racism is a big one to me. People don't change overnight, and they don't change just because they are in a classroom.
6. And... this is a big one, bad or good, teachers should never be put in a place where they must decide if the students they are teaching may become one they might have to shoot today. This is wrong in so many ways.
7. Teachers (even bad teachers) become close to students (sometimes like family), & some teachers teach decades in the same school in small towns. It's insane to expect them to prepare to shoot one of their students. Even Soldiers aren't expected to shoot one of their own.
8. -Soldiers are trained to kill the enemy (many times "faceless")
- Police are trained to shoot criminals
Yet, the @NRA and @GOP expect to train teachers to shoot possible friends and family they know? How cruel is that to put on anyone, especially those who work for good.
9. It's a bad idea and it was stupid for the @GOP, @NRA, & POTUS to even suggest it. Let's take care of our teachers & students by giving them the tools they need to become mentally strong and successful adults, by providing more counselors in school, even at the primary levels.
10. Let's train our teachers and counselors to catch personal issues early on and let's fight for mental health and personal counseling to be provided for through insurance. Let's give tools to teachers to help students do better in school so they can do better in life.
11. Also, let's all fight for sensible gun reform so children can go back to being students and teachers can teach them what they need to learn to make this world a better place, & a safer place, for everyone. Together we can make a difference!
