New documents add to evidence that former ⁦@ucsantabarbara#anthropology prof Danielle Kurin intended to deceive a grieving mother into thinking Kurin had found the remains of her missing teenaged son. Story update soon. michael-balter.blogspot.com/2022/08/bones-…
1/ The documents indicate that Kurin deliberately misrepresented the identity of a graduate student she had enlisted to “peer review” her findings that she had found the missing boy, by identifying her as a “professor.” This was doubly duplicitous because the grad student…
Was entirely dependent on Kurin for completing her PhD thesis and Kurin was on her PhD committee. 2/ The documents indicate that Kurin repeatedly attempted to dissuade the boy’s mother from having the remains DNA tested, claiming falsely that this would destroy the bones…

I appreciate this thread for what it's explaining (namely environmental change becoming normalized due to short cultural memories)

--<<BUT>>--

There's a pretense here: that it's a common human experience. No, it's not. There were tribes *living* in the Americas in 1620.
🧵
Terra preta, companion planting, contour farming... Literally millions of humans lived in the regions that forest map shows as 'pristine' and they were regularly engaging in agriculture. In fact that's what we call it in anthropology: "The Pristine Wilderness Myth".
This is where the lie "humans are the virus" originates. This is where the primitivists, and their false assertions about returning to cave-men status will 'restore the balance', comes from.

Thousands of cultures worked just fine with the environment that surrounded them.

K, as news of The Paper (and fallout) filters outside #anthrotwitter, I think it's worth considering this was a failure on multiple levels not just QR's #PeerReview.

Ex: The Society for Visual Anth awarded him "Best Student Film" in 2021, for the same thing. Society for Visual Anthropo...
I'm not pleased to draw more attention to this, knowing there's a good chance it will hinder my own work.

I'm angry. I know so many who got rejected for lifting up voices that deserved to be heard, while this... whatever it is made the cut, repeatedly.

#Anthropology
I keep seeing retweets of critiques that say things like "serious lack of self-reflexivity" or "inept methodology".

I gotta ask, why is anyone giving him the benefit of the doubt? Why were so many people who found out about this paper critiquing it like it was any other essay?

Sooo here's a thing:

In a thread about subtextual white supremacy, I discussed how European sanitation during the Colonial Period was not exactly fantastic.

A few 'historians' impolitely disagreed. The implication was Natives were nothing to brag about. Let's explore:

🧵👇
It all centered around historical records of people visiting Versailles, complaining about the lack of public toilet facilities, and being generally flabbergasted (read: nauseated) by the overall smell of the place. Some 'historians' in my mentions were NOT happy.
One was so pissed off I would even suggest Louis XIV's palace wasn't a place I'd care to have dinner, they started sending me paintings and drawings of women from the time peeing into bowls. No joke. I don't know *why* they thought I'd be in to watersports, but there it was.

#Hobbit-like human ancestors thought to have gone extinct 12,000 years ago might still be hiding away in #Indonesia, an anthropologist has claimed.

In 2004, late anthropologist Mire Morwood discovered #fossils of a tiny species of hominin on Flores, an #Indonesian island.

Named Homo floresiensis & dating back to the late #Pleistocene, this was a contemporary of early modern humans in Southeast Asia.

📸: Peter Brown Image
The diminutive hominin bore a resemblance to the australopithecines and even chimps to some extent.

Considering the kind of attention that #LordOfTheRings garnered in the early 2000s, it was only natural that the fun-sized H. floresiensis be nicknamed after #TheHobbit.

1/n 🧵 ICYMI "Scaling of Hunter-Gatherer Camp Size and Human Sociality"

New paper (@UChicagoPress) led by José Lobo (@ASU) & co-authored by a team incl. SFI's @BettencourtLuis (@miurbanchicago) & Scott Ortman (@CUBoulder), result of an SFI working group:

This new research deploys #ScalingLaw insights to understand the population-density driven transition from temporary hunter-gatherer settlements to permanent sedentary city life.

Image
3/n
Previous research on the impact of densification on the transition into city life has yielded conflicting results, some suggesting that hunter-gatherer groups actually thin out as they scale. (In what ways might this reflect transitions in the scaling of microbial organisms?) Image

ICYMI: The settlement in the $18 million defamation suit Danielle Kurin filed against me for my truthful reporting on her misconduct is now null and void, but the lawsuit itself has been dismissed with prejudice. Kurin now has bigger problems. michael-balter.blogspot.com/2021/10/metoo-…
Will the Santa Barbara County Sheriff charge Kurin with violating the CA Health and Safety Code for failing to report her finding of human remains for 2 months? michael-balter.blogspot.com/2021/10/the-st…
By violating the agreement we had come to, in which I made a major concession to her in exchange for publication of a document that showed my reporting was right, Kurin has badly damaged her own interests, something she does habitually. This story is far from over.
