The combined entity of Warner Bros. and Discovery is expected to spend $22B on content in 2022, per Wells Fargo/@xscreenmedia. WBD is projected to generate $52B in revenue in 2023 & carry an estimated enterprise value of $150 billion, per @FinancialTimes.
Per Discovery’s earnings reports, 67% of its $2.79B in 2020 revenue came from domestic networks. Even as a decaying model, it enables WBD to mine some value from linear business, which still stands at ~70M customers in the U.S. (with ~6M cutting the cord per year).

But the data provided by #Antenna to the #WSJ also revealed an inconvenient truth: The Phantom menace of Churn is real. Almost 50% or more of the original subscribers of movies like #WW84 and #Hamilton are gone after 6 months in a streaming service.

The data provided by #Antenna also show how big series such as #Netflix #BigMouth or #Hulu’s #HandmaidsTale although not attracting as many subscriptions as big films, do a slightly better job in retaining most of subscribers attracted during weekend of release for longer.

The article mentions that at one point, Zucker (the head of CNN) was planning on bombarding viewers with documentaries and docu-series. That's a proven and profitable originals strategy in #cable that is the equivalent of an innings-eater in baseball.
Of course. Not that many people (relatively) watch baseball anymore. And in these times of social unrest, hitting people over the head with lifestyle documentaries isn't exactly going to be something that brings a lot of people running over to CNN.

Why Warner Media? Well, day-to-day, they’re really the folks running a streaming platform. All the partnerships and promotions run by AT&T are nice, but the content/product folks are responsible for making HBO Max succeed.
