Six effective #teaching practices: anyone disagree? #ITeachMath
Pairing graphics with words.
Young or old, all of us receive information through two primary pathways - words and graphic or pictorial representations. Student learning increases when teachers convey new material through both.
Linking abstract concepts with concrete representations.
Teachers should present tangible examples that illuminate overarching ideas and also explain how the examples and big ideas connect.

Awesome article! And: take just about every single thing written about the coaching and learning of sports here, and hit ‘find/replace’ for math, and you have more of the full picture of what’s going on with #math instruction.
I’ll elaborate some parallels here: “Strict, militaristic discipline and authoritarian power with frequent outbursts of screaming and cursing” — “Strict, “get it right the first time” focus, authoritarian pedagogies with direct and indirect messages that demoralize students
“Winning at all costs” — increasing test scores at all costs

🧵While walking to VU this morning to teach class for #SystemsThinking in #PublicHealth, I began pondering the challenges I experienced. Also how designing & teaching this unit has taught me much about #LearningDesign & #teaching more broadly.

All pics in this thread by me!
It does feel risky to write this thread but here we go...

The interaction of studying the Graduate Cert in #TeritaryEducation & designing & teaching a unit in #SystemsThinking in #PublicHealth has really altered the way I think about Public Health teaching & learning @CAPHIA1
It has been transformative but also I have felt profoundly alone & unsure of where there was space - apart from here - where I could safely bounce ideas around about how to address the challenges experienced in the classroom. The #LearningDesigner I work has been phenomenal...

Today I was asked to teach the origin of the Exodus myth. If there is no archaeological evidence that the Israelites were ever in Egypt (and there is none), then where did the myth come from? Well friends, let's do this! #thread #threads #exodus #teaching
And God said to Abram, “Know well that your offspring shall be strangers in a land not theirs, and they shall be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years; 14 but I will execute judgment on the nation they shall serve, and in the end they shall go free with great wealth.  /2
You'll notice here that Egypt is not mentioned by name.

There is no direct evidence that people worshipping Yahweh sojourned in ancient Egypt, let alone during the time the Exodus is believed to have happened.
The names of the reigning Egyptian kings are not given; /3

A thread on methods of teaching #bioethics:
Most bioethics textbooks use ideal theory. They start with ethical theories that can be applied to case studies... 1/6
Ideal theory, says Charles Mills, is “a distortional complex of ideas, values, norms, and beliefs that reflects the nonrepresentative interests and experiences of a small minority of the national population.”... 2/6
Ideal theory focuses on ideals to the exclusion of non-ideal social conditions. It asks us to look at cases/scenarios detached from our dystopian (white supremacist, patriarchal, capitalist, eugenic) reality... 3/6

As part of my digital role I have been banking all the interesting Twitter threads on #ChatGPT in #education and #teaching. I thought it would be useful to signpost educators to what it can do. 🧵🧵🧵

🧵 Are exams really the best way to measure intelligence and knowledge?

In this thread, I'll share my thoughts on why I think it's time to reconsider our current examination system in high schools and universities.

Reason 1: Dissonance between subject understanding and ability to pass tests.
I have been through most of the Western educational system and for as long as I can remember, I’ve had this gut feeling of dissatisfaction when preparing for tests. In my experience, there is a dissonance between passing a test and fundamentally understanding a subject.

I left #teaching on Friday. I've had a few days to recover and gather my thoughts, and here they are. I loved the school, loved the children, had great success and was proud of my achievements but after 7 years of giving my heart and soul, I had to stop. Something has to change.
When I joined the school I was impressed with the enlightened attitude to workload, in particular the feedback policy (no crazy book marking, lots of WCF and verbal feedback instead), and behaviour was better than nearby schools... but...
After COVID and the new #OFSTED framework, expectations seemed to ramp up, and behaviour declined. My work days lengthened, while - a victim of my own success - class numbers at GCSE and A-level rose. We couldn't recruit, so I was stretched to breaking point.

Other members are:

- MSA
- PD
- PDD

All of them have abnormal inclusions of α-Synuclein at a pathological level.
