Day 14 of #TurkeyJewishRoadtrip:

Cappadocia...

Did you know that the Jews of #Cappadocia have an ever lasting impression on every Jewish home celebrating #Shabbat?

Rosh Hodesh Tov 😂

(enjoy the beautiful scenery while you read...) Image
You see, some Jewish communities of Anatolia left their mark etched in stone. Some left significant buildings, cemeteries, books (we will talk about that too), but some were so significant that the Talmudic scholars have enhanced Jewish law to accommodate their specific needs! Image
After the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in the year 70 CE, the great rabbis gathered in the city of Yavne, and collaborated in adopting Jewish law to a new situation, Judaism without a central Temple... Image

Friday evening, I welcomed #Shabbat with a lovely and inspiring online event hosted by @HarvardHillel.

Attendees ranged from a member of the Class of 1971 to the current undergraduate Hillel president, a rising junior. (1/5)
It was still daylight when the event ended. Checking email, I found a message from Harvard President Larry Bacow, on #antisemitism.

It included this worrying line: "In the past two weeks, Harvard Hillel has been vandalized twice." harvard.edu/president/news… (2/5)
Since this news hadn't come up during the online gathering, I tried locating more specific information over the weekend myself.

But apart from one reference in the Harvard Police public crime log to "vandalism to a banister outside" the building, I could find nothing. (3/5)

37.01/ Week 37, March 29-April 2, 2021, thread begins here.

Week 36 is linked below
37.02/ This looks like a fruitful account. This particular entry has an intro that displays a kindred spirit IMO

37.03/ While I'm grateful that Coca-Cola has gone through the trouble to make their products kosher for #Passover, I cannot understand drinking Diet Coke willingly. Honestly, if unlabeled, I'd assume it was some drug-store's generic cola.

TL;DR: Diet coke is nasty.

Here is a short thread as we light the candles for the seventh night (tomorrow on Motzei #Shabbat) of #Chanukah 🕎 called 'Inside / outside'. Chanukah sameach! 🥳 Image
There is more than one command in Judaism to light lights. There are three. There are the Shabbat candles. There is the havdalah candle. And there are the Chanukah candles.
The difference between them is that Shabbat candles represent shalom bayit, peace in the home. They are lit indoors. They are, if you like, Judaism’s inner light, the light of the sanctity of marriage and the holiness of home.

Thread -> Of all the festivals, #Sukkot is surely the one that speaks most powerfully to our time. #Kohelet - which we will read this #Shabbat - could almost have been written in the 21st century.
Here is the picture of ultimate success, the man who has pursued everything this world can offer from pleasure to possessions to power to wisdom. And yet, surveying the totality of his life, he can only say, in effect, “Meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless.”
Kohelet’s failure to find meaning is directly related to his obsession with the “I” and the “Me”: “I built for myself. I gathered for myself. I acquired for myself.” The more he pursues his desires, the emptier his life becomes.

The beauty of #Jewish #spirituality is precisely that in #Judaism, #God is close. You do not need to climb a mountain or enter an ashram to find the Divine Presence.
It is there around the table at a #Shabbat meal, in the light of the candles and the simple #holiness of the Kiddush wine and the challot, in the praise of the Eishet Chayil and the #blessing of #children, in the #peace of mind that comes when you leave the #world to look after…

#Shabbat is the only day of the year in which the evening, morning, and afternoon prayers are different from one another.
In the Friday night Amidah, we refer to the Shabbat of creation: “You sanctified the seventh day for Your name’s sake as the culmination of the creation of heaven and earth.”

What is so special about #Shabbat? Three things. First, it introduces in the most vivid way the idea of limits. We can’t produce, consume and deplete our resources constantly with no constraints and no thought for future generations.
Second, it creates for one day a week a world in which values are not determined by money or its equivalent. On Shabbat you can’t buy or sell or pay for someone’s services. It is the most tangible expression of the moral limits of markets.
Whether in the synagogue or at home, relationships are determined by other things altogether, by a sense of kinship, belonging and mutual responsibility.
